At what age can you crate a pup? I just got a 4 month old yorkie and right now she is in an ex pen (play yard). I was just wondering at what age can they be put in a crate. I have an 8 1/2 month old boy yorkie but from the time I got him at 8 weeks old, I put him in a childs playpen and he held it all night (11 hours). So going from a playpen to a crate was nothing for him. She does not hold it all night and if someone can let me know when to put them in a crate. The only time my babies are crated is for bed time and when we eat Thanks for any help and/or suggestions anyone can offer. |
I'd say from the beginning. I began crate training my lab at 8 weeks. Bella at 4 months but only because that was when I got her. They're never too young to start learning  |
Im agree - they can be crated from 8 weeks, however, the length of time they can hold is much different than a larger dog. First of all, Yorkies are MUCH more difficult to potty train! Our lab was completely house-trained by 8 weeks of age, is 8 months old, and has not had one accident since. She has been crated all night since just about that time. My Yorkies, on the other hand, have been much harder. And they STILL have accidents from time to time! Even now my Romeo is 3 yrs old, and if I do not let him out by 5:30 a.m., he will have an accident in the house. Nothing I have done has broken him of this - I have just adjusted to the fact that he can only hold it that long. |
