Where Did My Sweet Boy Go..... Hunter is 8 weeks old. When I have him out for play sometimes he gets real mean when I try to hold on to him. He growls at me and trys to bite my hand. He does this until I let him down. I have tryed holding him until he stops but that hasn't worked. When he bites at my hand I tell him no bite and try to pet him but he still bites at my hand so I let him get my finger and tell him no bite while I put my other finger on his nose and pinch to try and get him to let go but that does not work either he just keeps holding on. What do I need to do? I don't want him growing up to be mean. How do I get him past this? |
When he bites you tell him NO BITE, put him down and ignore him. All pups are going to try to get away with stuff but, you have to let them know YOU are the alpha. |

Most important, you can NOT let him get away with this. Like the other ladies said, he needs to learn that YOU are the boss, and he needs to submit to you. You need to comminucate to him that biting is not acceptable, and you will NOT tollerate it. Rolling over on their back is (in dog language) submitting, so if you try to hold him down on his back, he is going to fight you. But - holding him on his back may get through to him that you are the alpha, and he is to submit to you! I hope that makes sense. You may also try telling him "NO BITE" with a stern voice, and afterwards picking him up and petting him gently, giving him treats and praising him for not biting. He may be afraid of being picked up(heights). This doesn't seem like the case, but you may try picking him up and petting him while giving him some treats, praising him. He will soon learn that everything's okay when you hold him. I am no expert, but these are some of the things I have read. Good luck with your baby! |
Thanks for everybody's responses. I have tried holding him on his back and telling him NO BITE until he settles down but that has not really worked. So now I will try giving him treats and praising him if he settles down when I have him on his back. I trained him to come when called by giving him Cheerios so hopefully it will work for this. |

Agressive Yorkie I too am having some troubles with our Yorkie. At 6 months of age she got very territorial. When laying down in the evenings, if someone walks into the room or our other dog comes into the room she gets on all fours and growls - sometimes even goes after the other dog. I am trying everything. My husband wants to get rid of her but I love her dearly and am trying to break this habit. I will take any help I can get also!! |
Same Issue.... I am having the EXACT same thing going on with Marley, he is almost 8 weeks old and during the day he is perfect and then at night he has the same behavior that you described!! It almost sounds like a rat trying to escape when you are holding him....I dont want him to be mean like this...what else can we do??? |
8 weeks if very young for a Yorkie to be taken away from its mother and litter mates who teach them socialization skills such as not biting too hard, submission, and pack order. Maybe that's the problem. It's a good suggestion to just put him down and ignore him for a little while. Also, he may not be used to being handled that much - so try giving him a body massage while holding him on your lap, but not on his back, so he'll associated being held with being a pleasurable experience. Thanks for advice, it is wierd that he is so sweet all day long and at night he goes crazy....I am hoping its a phase but in the mean time I try to discipline and ignore as much as possible..thank you |

Just wanted to let everybody know that Hunter is getting better at not bitting. I think what is working for me is that I do the same thing my poodle does when he bothers her to much and she wants him to stop. When Hunter starts bitting and getting mad I will say NO BITE, growl and snarl at him just like my poodle does. I know it sounds like a strange thing to do but it is working.
