QUES: Have you ever switched from indoor to outdoor potty training? My dog Lily was indoor potty trained when we got her. She uses her puppy pads really well. She learned to go outside as well from our other dog Dexter and she goes potty outdoors fine too. She doesn't 'tell' us when she wants to go out though and just follows Dexter's lead and goes out when he goes out. My husband wants to get rid of the puppy pads completely (after she's done nursing her pups) and just let her to go outside only and I'm just wondering if any of you have ever tried switching the way you've trained your yorkie. Did they pick it up right away or was it a struggle? What are some methods you used to teach them that they can only go outside now? I just hope she can learn to do what he wants from her. I don't really mind the pads too much and it feels like I'm the only one who cleans them up, but he says they're gross and wants to get rid of them... Any suggestions are much appreciated.... |
I was gone a lot during the day when my Yorkie was a puppy and he learned quickly what the puppy pads were. When I was home, I would move the pad closer and closer to the door. I would also keep an eye on him and whenever he went to the pad, I'd take him outside. Of course, when he went outside, I would reward him with a treat and praise him a lot. He still struggles a little with knowing where to go poop (I used to put the puppy pad in my shower, so he thinks that is where he should poop) , but he is coming along. Many people in this forum talk about potty training issues, so maybe Yorkies are just a little stubborn in this department. Good luck! |
