Harness Issues HI all! Hopefully someone can help me? It seems like every harness we get Bentley he bites through. He spends his days rolling on the grown trying to get it off...or biting through it. The last one we got him was thin strap, so it was easy for him to get through. We kept it on him because getting it on him every day to go for a walk was hard. Any one have a harness suggestion? or atleast a way to keep it from being bitten through? Thanks in advance! We're on our 3rd harness over here....any help is appreciated! |
Have you tried the puppia harnesses. They are cute, and aren't as easy to chew on as the strap harness. http://ipuppyzone.com/shop/step1.php?number=39 |

Have you tried the leather Buddy Belt? |
I would just soak the harness in something that smells gross, like vinegar or bitter apple. Loki was a leash/harness chewer until he was about 8-10 months old. He grew out of it. Every time he started to chew I said no and gave him something else to chew. I never left the harness on when he was bored enough to chew on it. Buy cheap nylon harnesses until he outgrows it! |
They have some really cute harness vests at Petsmart for about $15. They might be more comfy for him, so he might not even want to bite it! I bought a thick faux-leather one, and Paddington chews it every once in a while, but hasn't even been able to leave teeth marks in it. I don't remember the brand name though, LOL I actually bought it because it was a pretty color green! The only problem is, the x-small is still a bit too big and sometimes when he really wants out of it (ie, when he's strapped into his car seat) he can fit one paw through the neck. He hasn't been able to get out of it yet, but I don't think it could be comfy for him to wear it like that, and it's really hard for me to get it off of him when he does it. Good luck! That must be a frustrating problem! -O |
Have you found anything??? |
I was going to suggest the bitter apple, but it looks like someone else already mentioned it. Be careful whatever you use. Make sure it's not something they end up liking. I had one dog that LOVED bitter apple! |

Mine chewed through 2 Buddy Belts. I have no idea how because she only wears harnesses in the car or to go outside. I've never caught her ~ she is so sneaky. I have a some of the Puppia Orion II and those are really nice and no chew throughs yet! |

OUCH!!! That's gotta be expensive!!:( |
What about the harness some of us make that go around the rib cage and around the neck. I doubt he could even reach it with his mouth. |

I have tried soaking them in vinegar AND rubbed them with clear deodrant, but to no avail. I have come to the conclusion that one of two things must be done -- either plain old fashioned discipline (which ever variety you use) OR only use the harness for walks. |
