Help!!!! Serious Problem! Please help. My Mugzy, who is five months old, will run out the front door and into the street if one of my children opens the door. So far, we have lucked out and no cars were coming. But the street is busy, and cars fly up and down. I would be more than heartbroken if anything happened to my baby. I try to give him treats if he sits and waits at the door when I say "eh-eh" sternly and wag my finger at him. Please, please help me keep my baby safe. |
you need to teach him the stay command and practice practic practice! Also try putting him on a leash and stand with the door open and correct him if he tries to run out. Also mabey pratice using the bathroom door making him wait till you go in or out before he can go |

Yep, I agree with Amber. As "pack leader" the dog(s) should always wait till YOU go out the door first. I'm teaching that to mine now. They want to push ahead to get outside but I tell them "wait" and they wait for me to step out or in first. It takes lots of practice but they get it. :) |
I strongly agree with what has been said here. If you do not correct this problem the day that you are regreting will come and that will indeed be a very tragic thing. Since you can't rely on the children to not let the dog out you have got to train the dog or find another solution. I would train the stay or wait command and work on it every single day even for 5min at a crack several times a day. You can find training instructions online. The other thought would be to put something at the door at ground level that the kids could step over to get outside, but would take more for your dog to get over (IE: a short baby gate, a piece of fabric, a board, something), this of course is just a bandaide and training would be better. Either way, don't let this one slip..take action to correct it now so nothing happens to your baby. Kathy |
My baby does the same thing...when he was younger he used to listen to my fiance. But know he doesnt listen to anybody. And ont op of it, he just got surgery and when we take him out to use the bathrrom, he takes off running across the street. We have tried everything to try and fix this proble, but we cant figure out how to stop our baby from doing this!!!! |

Keep him on a leash! And when you walk him, follow the same route -- one that goes AWAY from the busy street. I live on a busy four-lane roadway. Once, Ozzie snuck out through a cracked door (thought he was in a carrier, but he wasn't). Caught a glimpse of him as he did it and ran after him. Luckily, instead of heading for the street, he made an immediate left turn up the driveway and started heading for the back yard -- our usual walking route. This suggestion is in addition to getting him to learn STAY.:) |
I agree you need a solution and fast...If I had young kids I'd try to rig something with a gate but that may not work with all homes..... you not only have to worry about him running - but you have to worry about the door being shut on him - I wish I had good advice but they're so fast you almost need him to be totally away from the door when kids are coming in and out. GOOD LUCK !!! |
I have two young children also; in the afternoon (and weekends) I put up a gate that the children can open, but the dogs can't jump. Tiger kept sneaking out with the kids, he wouldn't run off, but sometimes he'd be out a couple minutes before anyone noticed that he was following them. We knew it was disaster waiting to happen, so now if the kids are headed out to play with friends/ or just in the front yard we have a routine that the gate must be up in the entrance way! It always open in the evenings when everyone is in for the day, and it works -- Tiger hasn't gone out to play with the kids since. Also I got this gate with a latch at Babies-R-Us -- the base and latch are permantly attached to the door frames, so the gate is aways there -- just it's only closed and latched when the kids are going in and out. |
Thanks everyone. I did schedule training classes and I'll look up the wait command online in the meantime. I think a baby gate is a good idea, I'll have to see if I can get one to fit in between the screen door and front door.:animal36 |
I agree with what everyone else says about training your dog, but I would add that you really, really, really need to teach your kids not to allow the dogs to run outside. If they are old enough to open the door and have the sense not to run in traffic themselves, they are old enough to know that dogs are not allowed outside unleashed. I apologize if it sounds like I'm lecturing, but I truly believe that families with kids who choose to own Yorkies have an added responsibility to teach their kids to protect the Yorkies. |
All excellent advice so far! One thing I'd add: in addition to a strong "stay" command, you need to teach a really strong "come" command in case the kids let him out. |

Children do not open the door with the intentions of letting the dog out. Us as adults can get out quicker and know how to maneuver so the dog usually does not get out. Everyone in the family has to be cautious of this big and small. What I think really, really, really needs to be taught is our dogs to not run out. |
