dog peeing in spite K so i have 2 issues here. 1.So as much as i read about dogs not knowing spite, its a human characteristic, i totally have a dog thats peeing/pooping out of spite. We put a baby gate up at the stairs to upstairs, becasue Gizmo gets up but gets stuck unless were there to walk down with him. So now when he sees us going up he runs over and pees. I mean its an easy way to get him to go before bed, but sheesh, having a pee pad right in front of the stairs isnt really ideal. We have tried moving the pee pad, but he still goes there, so makes sense to leave it there. But do you think we will ever get him trained on the pads and not on a spot? 2. Another thing is hes starting to hide his treats, is this normal. Maybe hes getting too many, but we still want to praise for going potty and coming down the stairs all by himself, but i mean hiding them for later, what's he scared were gona eat them, haha! Very weird. He even went so far as to hide one in the grass on saturday and find it sunday. Anyone experience either of these 2 things? |

I have my own feelings about dogs feeling spite towards humans, I disagree but will keep that to myself :), Maybe try running him out, or put him on the pad B4 you head up the stairs so when you do his bladder is empty? Treats, Yorkies are a true terrier by nature and love to bury their treats, this is what many dogs/wolves do in the wild. Mine will chew their bones for awhile and then go bury them outside or in my chair cushion or under their bed, its just what they do. Not much help for you, but there you have it! Kathy :) |

I agree that it's perfectly normal behavior for a dog to want to "save" a bone or treat for later. He's not being sneaky, he's just trying to make sure it'll be there when he wants it. You really don't know that Gizmo is peeing out of spite. It may be that your going upstairs without him is extremely anxiety-provoking. Dogs often pee when stressed. OR, maybe he is peeing out of spite. The fact is that we don't know. The problem with saying it's spite is that it makes US defensive - it makes us want to punish the dog rather than problem-solve. If Gizmo runs to the pad to pee, I'd say you are way ahead of the game! Reward him for using the pad. Make your going upstairs less stressful for him rather than more and you may well find that he stops this annoying behavior. Good luck! |
We use to have a poodle who would pee out of spite. Who ever corrected him that's whose pillow he would go pee on. We finally had to keep our bedroom blocked so he couldn't go in there. Being the patient person I am (most of the time) I should have bought stock in the pillow industry...lol |

I really don't think they do anything out of spite....except if you have 2 and one will steal the toy from the other :D I keep my carpet rooms CLOSED off because even at 3 Cheri still likes to sneak in and pee on carpet .... as far as hiding treats and things - My Chanel is FIVE years old and hides stuff ALL OVER MY HOUSE....She is so serious on her hiding places and puts alot of thought into each one ....if you DARE to look at what she hid - she'll MOVE it LOL...She has big fun checking her stashes throughout the day it's a yorkie thing and I think it's totally CUTE CUTE CUTE ! |
I completely agree that dogs can do things out of spite OR you can say they do something because they are mad at you. However you want to look at it. I had a cocker spaniel and when I would get onto him for something he would go and chew MY sago palm AND when my husband got onto him he would go and leave a big health ;) on our hot tub cover. (The hot tub was in the ground so he could walk on the cover). He NEVER did either of these unless he got in trouble for something. BRAT:rolleyes: Cody (my teapot Yorkie) will hide from me when it is bed time. He does this on purpose. He can tell when we are winding down and getting ready for bed. So he hides, every single night we have to go through this. He will NOT come when you call him.:rolleyes: |
