I don't know what to do

We have had our little puppy for a few months now and its been our faults for not being so consistent with potty training. But now its gotten to the point where he is peeing on the bed. I just can't have that no matter how much I love the little guy. He is only five and half months old, I realize he is still a baby but I have to fix this problem now. We leave him out to have the house to himself all day long and we come home and he has pooped and peed everywhere. I know thats our faults but how do I fix this, and without being so drastic and mean to where he doesn't want to be around us anymore because he feels like we are punishing him. I keep reading all this different things to do and I am just so confused, can someone please help.

You need to confined him to a small area at first such as a ex-pen or maybe in a gated kitchen. He need to learn where the potty place is. Right now he is confused.Only let him out when you are home .

Make a special place for him Bed and water bowl and the potty pads at the other end.My dogs are over a year old now and I still dont let them have free movement in the house. And Yes they still have accidents.

 Great advice.
X-pen, kitchen, bathroom, large crate, anywhere confined so that HE can learn. Not only that, but as an added benefit, his mess when you come home is suddenly confined. Once he learns that "this is my kitchen, that's my food and water over there, here's my blankets and there's my toys, and I'm going to pee and poop over there to keep it away from everything else"... then expand.
Once he has more room (or is out to play or something), if he has an accident, put a pee pad there so that he knows pee goes on the pee pad. When we were training Pixie, it wasn't uncommon for us to have 3-4 pee pads around the apartment when she was out. And when she'd go back to that same spot to pee, there'd be a pad there. And we ONLY let her out when we were there to supervise. Otherwise, she stayed crated. We tried the kitchen bit, but between them, Preston chewed on the walls and Pixie pulled the wallpaper off :p Now, she's 1, potty trained, and has run of the apartment all the time unless she does something and deserves to be crated (She can be spiteful - She's been known to jump in your lap if she's pissed at you and pee all over you)....

Could you use belly bands so he maybe wont go til you take him out?

It won't be mean to confine him to a smaller space till he learns where to potty. I'm sure he'll fuss at first but he 'will' appreciate having his own space. I think a lot of times we try to give them the run of the house too soon and don't realize that it's very overwhelming for a puppy and that they need a safe, cozy, den-like space to feel secure in. Good luck:)

We started from day one keeping Chip crated when we left the house, but let him sleep with us at night. He did great at first, but then he started peeing on the bed. We then decided after dealing with that for a whole week that he needed to be crated at night as well. We miss having the little guy with us, but believe me, you will have fewer accidents.

Consistency is the key. Whichever method you choose, whether it be gating off an area, crate training, etc., you must stick with it. It sounds like you know this is the main issue so you have to choose to rectify the situation and enforce it.

The problem is, your little boy has never learned that it's not okay to just use the bathroom whenever and wherever. That's why you find the messes everywhere and why he is peeing in your bed. He hasn't learned to hold the urge and go to the right place or ask to be taken outside.

And as for the peeing in the bed, a puppy who isn't house-trained has no business being on the bed. I know it's fun to cuddle and sleep with them, but you must be strict about this rule. My husband and I hate that Riley can't sleep with us like Penny does, but she's only 7 months old and still makes messes sometimes. We won't allow her to sleep with us until she's at least a year old; and then, we'll just have to see where she is in her training and behavior.

Hi

Sorry to hear you are going through a difficult time :thumbdown a little tip for you is also to ensure that when he has a wee do not clean it up with an amonia based substance as all he will do is return there as his urine is full of amonia. After every meal and when ever he wakes up take him outside so that he realizes that this is where his business is done:thumbup:

Goo Luck :animal-pa

It can be very tough

particularly if you detoured early on, to get them on track.

I'm almost embarrassed to say it was nearly FOUR years before Ozzie could have complete run of the house. Work schedules made it very hard during the first year to keep his training consistent, the second year had its own set of foibles to derail us and during his third year, I changed jobs completely. Lots of ups and downs for both of us.

But during his third year, my mother began working from home so she watched him and worked with him. By the end of that year, it was pretty smooth sailing.

I can tell you from experience that you have to be both dilgent and consistent. Sometimes, it's exasperating. But once you get them to a good point, you'll appreciate all the tough times all the more!
