Barking at people during walks Both of my dogs but Chachi is the worst, bark at everyone when we go on walks. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can get them to calm down and we can have a quieter walk?? |
I would like to know the answer to this too. Memphis growls at everyone that he sees and meets. He isn't a biter. But he will growl up a storm. I always joke that he loves his momma and only his momma but it is starting to get annoying. |
We don't generally pass any people on our walks but if you could add horses to that list it would be great. Reagan wouldn't walk by the pasture that has horses it in for a while. I will say though she's getting a little better, she'll walk by but she won't quit barking. |
Is he barking hysterically or barking like...."Hey man...What's up ...SEE ME ? I'm on my WALK !!" ...sometimes they're just so excited they have to yell at everyone that goes by... it he wants to rip everyones shoes off.... you may want to try training classes....if it's just being mouthy - well...training classes for that too :D ...or.... just kneel down and tell him quietly ...'No bark' ... and sometimes after a while they just learn not to - I had to do that with Chanel in my old neighborhood...it's too bad we don't walk anymore - I miss it...there's too many big dogs where I live now... |
No its not an agressive type of barking but everyone asks if he bites because he barks soo much. I have been trying to take him on more walks hoping that would help but he still does it. He just gets so excited. |
My 2 year old yorkie, Chesney is continually getting worse about this. Chesney actually lunges at people and when I pull him back or pick him up he acts even worse. It's like he's braver when I'm around- This is becoming a real problem and I don't have $60 an hour for pet therapy. That's the amount I was quoted. I have had Yorkies for years and know they have a lot of attitude issues, but Chesney's is getting out of control. Where do I turn and how do I address this without making it worse? |
I've been dealing w/ this for awhile,, I've learned ( doggie school) tug the leash some to distract and say NO (firmly) everytime they do it,, and PRAISE when they dont do it.. Bailey would do this ALOT in class and the trainer said " distract with a sit, or down" something to distract them then PRAISE when they do that. Worked for us... now he just does a low growl when we pass a dog ( just to let me know that he sees the dog,,and he COULD bark, but he's not) ha  Which is much better!~~ |
Maddie does this with some people now and used to do it with almost everyone at first. For her it was not an aggressive bark but it seemed DEfensive. Sort of like she was trying to let those people know she was tougher than she looked. For Maddie, socialization did the trick. We take her places with lots of people and have lots of people over to the house. We take treats on walks and have strangers who want to pet her give her a treat. Its a reward for being brave enough to go up to the strangers. As long as the barking isn't aggressive I would try to let her get to what/who she is barking at. Once there's no mystery there will likely be no barking. Tom |
It's amazing how a 3 pound dog can have a 300 pound attitude. Maggie is just now getting an attitude, so I will attempt to get it under control. Yea Sure!!!!! :D |
