Bitting Problem... My little Micha is 5 months old and he will not stop biting everything! I know he is just playing but he seems to be doing it more and more and it's sarting to become anoying and sometimes hurts! At first I thought that he was just teething, but now I just think he just likes to bite. He jumps at people and keeps nipping, yesterday he was hanging off my son's finger! He hasn't drawn any blood but it does hurt. How do I make him stop this anoying habit?? Is this normal? |
It's "normal" to some extent, but shouldn't be encouraged. You need to firmly tell him "no" when he's biting something. If he continues, say "no" again, and lightly tap him on his side or on his nose. He should stop. Continue to do this until he doesn't bite anymore. Consistency is key, if you only do it sometimes, he won't learn not to bite! Good luck. :) |
Yes it's normal. Buddy did this all the time and he hurt. I would gently hold his mouth closed and tell him no then put one of his own toys in his mouth and say good boy. It did not take him long to catch on. They just need to know what they are allowed to chew on. |
Try the bitter apple spray. I tried to say ho and tap my boy on the nose but he gets more mad and tries to play/bite with fingers. I run and grab my bitter apple spray and spray it on my wrists and hands and he wont go near them. THEN i give him his toy. Again this wont work straight away, they will eventually catch on with consistency |

I was so happy to read your post. I am almost beside myself with Tucker today. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely adore him but I am just so frustrated! Most often he is sweet, cuddly and playful but lately he has been having these fits of hyperactivity that include biting, not just nipping or mouthing, but biting that really hurts! He goes for my toes alot or other really sensitive areas like my love handles and the skin between my thumb and forefinger...I even have bruises. I've been firmly saying, "No biting" and tapping him on the side and then redirecting him to an appropriate activity but he won't stop...he just keeps coming. I've now left him two or three times in a row after the reprimanding so he knows I mean business but it's really difficult. I am almost in tears. I guess I will have to get the bitter apple spray and hope that it works. |
Our trainer in our puppy class said to make a sound like an injured dog, as in "OW-WOW-WOW-WOW!" This lets them know that it hurts you. Or say "EH-EH" really loud which effectively startles them and evidently sounds a bit like a disapproving bark which is what they would get from mom, if they bit their mom. I say "EH-EH" whenever our furbaby does something wrong and she stops immediately. Sometimes she starts in again, and then I repeat it with more emphasis. You also have to have the right inner attitude at the same time which is that you simply don't stand for that kind of behavior, just like you wouldn't if it was your child. They sense your inner energy, so you gotta have the right energy. |

LOL I have the same problem with my five month old. Glad I'm not the only one!! I'll have to try the hurt sound and see what happens, that great advise. LOL.. I hope he don't think its funny and bits me more!!!! |
yeah i tried the ow noise, etc, and he just starts to bark at me then, haha. Guess were all having the puppy problems. Mine's 5 months old too. I figure its a teething thing, and luckily he ONLy does it with me and my b/f. Hes great with the neighbours and kids, but it still scares me that he might nibble someones fingers one day. |
I guess it's just "the terrible 5 months" LOL:D |

I love YK! |
They bite because they are bored, you need to let him chew on a bully stix or a texas tooth pick. A small metal bowl and a spoon is great for disciplining. When they misbehave, take the spoon and bang the bowl and say NO, I guarantee it will work! |
Dont Worry!!! My little Max went through the terrible 5 mos as well, so did my cousins yuri, and my sisters mia all at that age.We did the ''no'' thing coupled with the ouch and dont play with them for a few minutes it works!!Keep it up and you will see the results in no time:thumbup: |
