a little tinker... My 6-month old yorkie female will tinkle (pee) alittle when she gets excited. It gets frustrating when you find out after you hold her when she's excited. She does hold herself usually through the night (up to 8 hours) Is this typical at this age or should I be training her not to? :aimeeyork |
I noticed that happened to Gucci when she was on heat. She will get so excited she will tinker a bit. I dont know if that is typical to the age, but i guess is something that just happens. I will love to hear if this has happened to others babies. |

Tito does this occasionally and I've heard of other Yorkie's doing it as well. |
I think it is pretty usual in general. My mom's Lhasa does this almost every time she sees me. She's just too excited. |
Yep, don't tell her I told ya but the regal Princess Chai does this too! I hoe she grows out of it . She is almost 6 months old. Does anyone have a dog that is older that used to do this and now doesn't? |
This is a great question and one that I have not read about yet on YorkieTalk. I've never seen a "small toy dog" do this only larger ones. But from the posts it sounds pretty normal. |
My baby used to do it. She stopped after a couple of months. But she is a bigger dog. To prevent it, we would ignore her when she got excited until she calmed down, and after about two weeks she quit doing it for the most part. She's only had one accident since, and it's when she saw her grandpa for the first time in a while. You just have to teach them not to get so excited. |

Lil Bit was doing this ALOT......but I just quit 'noticing' her (really difficult) when I came home or whatever......after a minute or two she calms down and then I can reach for her, pet her....or let her into my lap...without a tiny dribble of pee. She doesn't seem to be doing it as much lately......but still at least every day it happens ....(she is now 7 months old) Unfortunately, many others won't listen to me when they come in....they each get a little gift from Lil Bit. |
No more Poochie piddles! :) Poochie is 2 years old now, but she used to do this until somewhere around the age of 10 months or so... This is when I found out about something called "submissive urination". It happens when the dog is overly excited, anxious, or scared but they CAN grow out of it! -Like the previous post pointed out, the trick is to not even 'notice' them as soon as you walk in the door. I know it's very hard, but just pretend you don't see him/her for a bit. -Go about your business and don't even LOOK in his/her direction for a few minutes until the dog calms down and realizes that they are not TOP PRIORITY as soon as you set foot through the door. -If you are going to have guests over, let them know ahead of time not to pay any attention to the pup until you tell them it's okay. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT if you want to break this habit. The pup has to learn not to sprinkle when ANYONE comes over, not just you. -After the pup's initial "Mom's home! I can't control myself" reaction wears off, then casually reach down and pet him/her for a second and say "good calm" or whatever key words you want to use. But don't go overboard with the loving until you know for sure that he/she won't get excited and piddle again. -A few weeks of repeating this each day will wean the pup from piddling every time he/she gets excited or scared when someone comes over. |

I see this is you first post. I wanted to welcome you to YT and thank you for the good advise. Gucci used to tinckle when she was in heat. Im glad to say that she has stop. I also try not to ger her too excited when I come home, so that might be a reason why she hasnt have any more piddle accidents. |
Thanks!! :) Marie, Thanks for the welcome!! :0) Disclaimer: After reading my post just now, I made myself sound like some kind of expert or something, which I CERTAINLY don't claim to be!! LOL I had used this technique after many, many rolls of paper towel used to dap up little piddle spots and many months of hoping she'd just 'grow out of it naturally'. It happened to work for me, but I definitely do not garauntee it! :) |
Cookie does this a lot. She's 10 months old now and she's been doing it since she's been a puppy. She doesn't do it all the time, only when she has a full bladder. She rarely pees when she sees me but frequently when she sees my mom or dad. Whenever my mom and dad come over to the house she gets so excited to see them. I think she is a little scared of my father so that's another reason she pees. She's been doing this less as she's been getting older. I think she may grow out of it. We'll see. |
Buddy tinkles when he's excited, and so does our friends Yorkie, Benji. It normally happens when we walk in the door, or when he see's someone he hasn't seen for a while. Don't know how to stop it, but we don't really mind too much - at least it means he's pleased to see us! lol |
My sister's Yorkie, Mickey does it when he's excited or scared. Her Vet told her that neutering him would stop it and so she got him neutered. Did it stop? No. :( But we do the "ignore" method when we first see him and it helps. But even after we've been playing with him, if he gets too excited or scared he will tinkle. He's still cute though. :) |
