Fear Agression Hi all, My male adopted Yorkie Alfie has shown very strong signs of fear aggression towards me but not my partner. We have had him since September last year and this has been going on the whole time we have had him. If he does something bad and we tell him off he will attack me by biting me. He only has 3 teeth so it doesn't hurt much. We have never shown any form of aggression towards him. If he does something really bad then we will tell him off. He has never once bit my partner. He is about 14 and we were wandering if this is to do with his past. He obviously had been beaten before and we believe he was thrown out. Is there something about me reminding him of his past?? Any suggestions on how we may be able to over come this would be greatly appreciated. Even though he only has 3 teeth there was one occasion where he bit me with one and wouldn't let go. |
First let me thank you for adopting a senior yorkie. It sounds like you and your partner have loving and kind hearts. Second it would be my guess that your new pet is afraid of YOU! It may have been a woman who mistreated the poor pup. I would work on getting his trust back. Give him little treats as you pass him by and say calming things to him like, good boy or mommy loves you. Don't force yourself on him just take it one day at a time. I bet after a week or so he will see you differently. Don't raise you voice to him even in repremanding him. Be gentle and kind and talk in a soft voice. You can repremand in that way as well. He needs to feel that he can trust you before he puts her guard down. Good luck I am sure it will all come together giving time and patience. |
Because you don't know of this dogs past, you will probably never know. It could be anything, your voice, your scent, your manners. Wow, congrats for adopting an older Yorkie, that is truly something special and I commend you. I would say that you continue to be patient and realize that this poor pooch has probably been through alot more then you know, remember that if he latches out you. Sometimes animals are hard to figure out. I have a parrot that I adore and she adores me, I feed her, bath her, clean her cage and even though she loves me, she loves my husband even more? Kathy |
Oh sorry to hear this. Bless your dear hearts for taking this poor little guy in. I would say that he does not view you as pack leader. He doesn't respect you. There are a few things you cn try. first of ally, you kee to be keeper of all things good, food, treats, even toys. you do the feeding and handing out the treats. And second, you need to eat before the dog, and in front of the dog. You could even pretend to eat some of his food out of his dish before you give it to him. this will make him realize that your status in the pack, is above his. Third, do not give him his food until he does something to earn it, such as sit and stay. Don't give him food when he is jumping or barking and demanding it. Hopefully that will help. |
