Much dispute over crate vs pen..a question Hi, I'm new and Ive read a lot of great info here. Seems to be a large disagreement over crate vs pen housebreaking. Some use a very large crate with pads/litter box inside..while others suggest using a very small crate INSIDE an exercise pen with food/water and pads/box all inside the PEN...to provide more room and comfort. Perhaps there is no exact way...to each his own, My question is if I decide to use the small crate(or a bed) inside a Pen, how large of an area should I allow? Thank you:) |
i have no advise. my babies have run of the house. i hope someone here can help you |
Im a crater. It works best for me and my boys. Just remember... what works for someone else may not work for you. |

Definitely a crate...........They love their own home/den. You always have them secure and out of harms way when you leave the house. If you are trying to potty train, it is the best way to go !!!!!! I feel crating at night is best.......they feel safe and secure in their own enclosed little space, and what if their is a fire (never say never) you know exactly where to go and get them. Crating for us is best !!!! And if you talk to alot of different dog experts, they say the same. God Bless |
Like potty training a toddler you get many different ideas, same with puppies, pick and choose what works best for you and then sometimes you change it all together. I prefer and have prefered the crate thoughout my association with dogs. It takes some adjustments but it has been successful, providing you use it correctly. I've done both the crate w/ litterbox inside and I've also just used a crate. Remember this, whereever your puppy is located when starting out if he has enough room to go pee/poo without disturbing his/her resting area he/she will use that spot. Thats why GENERALLY the crate works because the pup should have just enough room to stand and turn around, most dogs do not like to mess their den. Now, pups who are purchased from mills or petstores sometimes poo/pee in their crate because thats what they had to do at the pet store or puppymill, they don't know any different. You will need to see what you feel most comfortable with. Good Luck, Kathy |

The issue is, how long are they going to be confined, and how old is the dog. Crate training is a great tool, but will not work on a puppy that cannot wait all day to potty. It is also not good, if the dog is in the crate all night and thefn all day. You have to use common sense and adapt the method to your individual dog and situation. there is no ONE right way. A combination of the two might be the most effective. use crate confinement when you are home to let them out frequently, and a larger cage when you are gone for long periods of time. |
Hi, Thanks for all the good advice.... |
i use the crate at bed times, it's open during the day time, and the dogs run free in the day, but i often find them in their crates having their naps. |
I used the crate training method. I crate Izzy at night and during the day he is in a small area of the house with his crate, food, pad and toys. He can also look out of the window, so he has a nice sized play area. Other times I may crate him when I need to clean so he is out of the way of brooms, cleaning products etc. Or when I go in the basement to wash or take a shower. I feel better when he is in there and he likes it too...since he is a bum he will just take a nap until I let him out!:D |
i used both. The crate at night, and the xpen during the day. it worked great and i loved that she didnt have to be stuck in that crate all the time. |

I crate Autumn when I go out (she has had no accidents since I started doing this) but I gate her in my bathroom at night time. I am afraid that she will get into trouble while I am sleeping!:animal-pa |
