Potty training help needed for new puppies I could use some help. I am getting 2 new puppies next month and I'm trying to get my housebreaking plan in gear. The problem is, I've been reading various sites and books and they all have one valid point in common. Do not start training the puppy too soon as they do not have the proper control over the blatter and bowels until they are at least 3 to 4 months old. Fine, I understand and even agree with that. The problem is they don't say what you should be doing during this time. Am I not supposed to introduce any type of potty routine during this time? Are they supposed to be allowed to pooh and pee anywhere? HELP!!! |
Congratulations!! I have no experience with one younger than about 16 weeks, however, regardless of how young Toto had been when we brought her home, she would have been introduced to her wee wee pads! :) I believe that a lot that we read is "rule of thumb" and should be taken with a "grain of salt" if there is no danger to our babies! ;) How old will the little ones be when you bring them home? Good luck!! |
I really think they should be started off learning the pee pad or going out side which ever method you decide to use. Just don't expect too much response at first. You have to be allert at all times as to what they are doing. The usual shortly after eating, playing and napping going to potty. But I found that taking them out (or to pee pad) about every 15 to 20 minutes with a treat or praise has worked for Buckeye and Ahia is almost there too. They eventually learn that this is where you want them to go. In my opinion, if you don't let them know from the first day they will think it is just fine to go on the floor. Its like: "Oh gee I better stop here and pee" SQUAT and then eventually its: "Oh gee I gotta pee but they like me to go over there so I will" and even if they can't control it at first they will at least try. Of course this is just my train of thought. How old will they be when you bring them home? 2 at the same time.. Oh I can't wait to hear about them. you are going to be busy huh? |
ldenise, also my thoughts on this subject! :) I would much rather be able to walk around at night not worrying about "stepping in something" and turn on the light to discover a soaked wee wee pad with possibly a few little brown "surprises"! I know that this seems to work better for some than others, but I am just soooo pleased! Besides, it is just toooo funny to be playing with Toto when suddenly she gets this little "look" on her face ... stops playing and trots out of the room like she is "on a mission" and then returns to pick up where we left off!! We began to sneak around and follow her and discovered that her "mission" was a potty break!! ;) |
they are really hard to potty train! Just keep at it! I used the potty pads, then put them by the door, then outside. If she got mad at me, she would poop or pee on the floor---especially if someone came to visit me. Finally at 9 months she was fully trained to go outside! Joy! Joy! She is now 10 months old and haven't had a mishap at all. I would recommend a crate at night. A nice soft fluffy pillow that she can sink into and be warm. I also made her a double fleece shirt to wear at night. It gets really cold here and I want her to be warm. Also, if you need to go on vacation and take them with you, the crate is really good if you need to go into a restuarant or somewhere. I also cover it at night. She was crying and whimpering, and once I covered it that stopped. Now she readily goes into the crate and settles right down. Pat |
