Am I training her incorrectly?
 

I am almost afraid to ask this since there are already so many threads, but I will anyway. I don't think Lily realizes that she is suppose to potty outside yet. I think she only goes outside when she happens to be there and the notion hits her. She never goes to the door asking to be let out and doesn't always potty when she does go out. A lot of times she will go out and come back in to immediately potty on the carpet. I began with potty pads but she would just not go on them at all.
So now I take her out often and tell her why we are there, but... I don't think she cares.
When I do catch her I correct her and take her out. Is she untrainable? I did the black light thing on my carpet the other night and OMG I was horrified at what I saw. I hope one of you are a master potty trainer and can help me.

OK, I know this isn't a fun post but I really do need some input.

I trained Gucci to use the pee pads. She was suing them without almost any accidents. But lately she has being very lazy and has being having more accidents. I don't take her out ofte and when we do sometimes she doesnt go either. Im going to start training her to go outside. She is 10 months old so i know I have to be patience because she has was train to use the pad. I guess that it might help when you take her outside to tell her to go potty. I remember my cousin told me when she trained her rotti she used to tell her "to go" everytime she took the dog outside. Im sorry I dont have that much input to help you.

Are you still having accidents inside? Does she let you know when she needs to go?

Yes she still has some accidents. Sometimes she just goes to the pee pads just fine. She really doesnt let me know, when i see her like sneefing around I tell her NO and take her to the pad.

use the reward system it truely works :thumbup: ... my hubby trained my coco in 30 min.to ring the bell just by rewarding him and opening the door everytime he rang it and he has not had an accident since he will hold it until we let him out even when we leave for a couple hours and he's in his area with pee pads he will not use it. so give it a try hopefully it works for you! :D

Get a diaper. I have a girl almost two and she still has accidents but not on my carpet. On her diaper. But they are getting fewer. I take her out often and she does not go all the time. she will let me know when she wants to out side. not buy barking by going to the door and giving me the look. But sometimes she just wants to go out there and play and not do her business :(

We have a similar problem with Maddie and brought it up with the trainer in our puppy training class at Petsmart. Here's what she said:

- Keep her contained. Either keep her in one room with you or keep her tethered to you. This way if she starts to go you will catch it and correct her before she finishes so you can take her outside.

- Ration out her food and water. Feed 2 or 3 times a day but make it a feeding time. Put the food and water down and then pick it up after 10 or 15 minutes. Take her out for a walk shortly after as its predictable then that she'll have to go. Don't leave water down all the time if she's having accidents give her water at meal times and after play time then walk her afterwards.

- Reward her and praise her like she just won the Nobel Prize every time she goese outside. We break up yogurt drops into 3-4 pieces and take them on walks. As soon as she squats we say "Do your business" (pick whatever phrase works for you) and as soon as she finishes we give a treat and lots of excited "Good girls!"

We've noticed that it also helps to have a regular area of the yard to take her to and to keep her in a fairly limited range until she goes. She doesn't get to explore until after she's down her business.

I see improvement after only a couple of days so I'm hoping this will work.

When I trained Sophie I timed her. When we first started it was every hour. (Now at seven mths she goes every three) I would take her outside to her pee pad on the porch and stay until she went. Don't give them free range of the house until they are trained so you can keep a close eye on them. Everytime Sophie would try to go potty in the house I would catch her and take her outside and tell her to go peeps on her rug. That is just the phrase we use you can think of your own. Even if you are not going to use the pads my vet suggested to still just use a small area of grass so they learn what their there for. With the pooping it was basically the same thing except it is easier when they are little if you keep them on a regular feeding schedule you can usually judge when they will have to do that. It was easy to tell when Sophie had to go poops she runs back and forth forever before she goes. It is pretty funny. I hope I have helped. Good look and be patient it can be done. Am I doing This Right???
 

Hello Everyone, I am a new mommy to one of the most loving puppies in the world, Precious. Well, I'm not sure if I'm doing "this" right because I just let Precious be herself she's only 11 weeks and I think that it's a little too early to try and train her. Even though I have introduced the training pads to her she tries to make it there but seem to fall 1 to 2 inches away each time ....And as far as the "crate thing" goes, I don't have one for her, even though I've purchased this really expensive but comfortable bed for her she loves to sleep with me & my hubby. Now we are young (21 & 23) so she is actually our little babygirl so I don't want to make her sleep in her bed if she doesn't want to???? Am I confused or is this ok???

no not at all......alot of people say that yorkies are hard to train but from my experience with coco and reading up on training in forums thier not hard to train at all. to me it all depends on the pup and consistency with the training your trying to instill in the dog. 4 months to me is old enough for them to start learning what's okay and what is not okay it may take you awhile maybe days weeks or months but likei said with consistincy i beilieve that dogs could learn anything. whatever your trying to train him to do whether it be him going outside with using the bell, etc...etc... stick with it don't change it because the dog will get confused this is what i did with coco atfirst i wanted him to use his peepads but he would only a few times so then i was like okay then i'll make him start going outside sure enough once i switched what iv'e been trying to teach him he just got so confused and started going everywhere.then my husband trained him to ring his bell sure enough he caught on in 30 min(i always say that because i'm so proud) so just stick to one thing and i'm sure your baby will be just fine soon you'll be writing about how fast she learned :D

i forgot to add that i never had to put coco in a confined area he had free range of my house since i got him and he did fantastic with his training :thumbup: if i confined him he wouldn't have been able to go and ring the bell by the door on his own :rolleyes:

I didn't confine Sophie to a small space either only to the living room and kitchen area where I could see her at all times.
