How much walk is too much? Could someone tell me how much walk is not too much for yorkie? I read in Barron's book about yorkshire terriers that 10-15km is okay for a healthy yorkie in a good condition? I have a rottweiler and yorkshire terrier and I take them to walks together for about 10km daily...is that too much for yorkie? ..sorry about my english, I'm from Croatia... |
SO 10 Km is equvalent to about 6 miles or so. My vet said that the dog will let you know if they are tired, so I am assuming that if your dog is able to do these walks, that it would be fine. My dog is 5 months old, and the longest I have taken him is 2 miles, but I am sure he would probably go farther. I say as long as they are healthy and aren't showing signs of extreme tiredness.......GO FOR IT!! Heidi |
Gracie's max so far is about 2.5 miles. I have not pushed her beyond that. |

I don't know about a Yorkie, but 2km would kill ME. Anyway, sorry I can't provide a more serious answer. |
My yorkie is now 8 months old. When he came to our home, we went out more often but took short walks just around our house and to play with other dogs. As he grew, we walked every day more and more...I always carried a dogy bag with me so I can carry him if I notice he gets tired. He usually sits then in front of me, waves his tail and waits for me to put him in the bag... But 10km now is seems to me okay for him because he runs all the time now and plays and even when he gets home after such a long walk, he's playful for a short period and then gets to sleep. I also have a 3 year old rottweiler who needs very long walks because it's a big dog so I always take yorkie with us but look if he gets tired and carry him in the bag then. I was just concerned if 10km (6miles) is too much for him...because he's only 8 months old. |

It sounds like what you're doing is OK. He is a little young, but you've taken it slow and eased him up to that distance. I agree with the others that you should watch him and make sure he's not struggling. Also, pay attention to him the next day and make sure he's not sore. You probably should ask your vet, too. I'm just guessing. My guys only go a couple miles a day. |
Thank you all for your advice! ;) In the search of the information we found this great forum  Unfortunately in my country there aren't so many yorkies and there are just 2-3 breeders. Thank God there's internet for more information! :D The vet told me the same think as you all did and our breeder also...I guess it's okay then if he can run that much ;) I always pay attention on his behaviour, don't worry :kiss3: I was just adviced not to let my yorkie jump too much while he's still very young because of the patellas...I just let them jump from very low places and I take him in the arms on stairs. |
You could always get him a doogie stroller!:D |
I think that if 6 miles was too much for your furbaby, he would let you know. Mine just refuse to walk when they don't want to. Actually I bet mine would love to walk that much a day! |
My long walk is 3.5 miles, and if my little Lucy gets tired she will actually lay down wherever. I just pick her up and carry her a while. A couple of weeks ago I walked them in the morning 3.5 miles and then my husband and I walked that evening. Lucy doing her sled dog act actually wore down her rear nails (2) and couldn't walk outside for a week. So if she walks calmly 3.5 miles is ok but no more 2 walks in one day! |
They would let you know when they are tired. Mine will just sit in the middle of my way and stare at me and whimper to be picked up hehehe. That is his way of telling me that his little feet are tired. I also find that the more you walk them, their stamina gets better and they can walk longer. |
Same here My Pixie is seven and I have a Westie who is three. When I take them for walks the younger and faster Westie runs off and leaves me and the Yorkie. They've about gotten used to walking together and we've established a pace for all of us. What I have noticed is that the older yorkie gets hot really fast. Her tongue hangs out after just a few yards. We walk about 2 miles a day. Sometimes I feel sorry for Pixie and carry her for awhile, but she's about 7 pounds and she gets heavy after awhile. I watch for her to tell me she's tired. She lets me know by just stopping and laying down. A brief rest and she's ready to go again. As the weather warms up we'll have to walk in late evening. |
I have two (who are sisters) but one is 2 years older and really spoiled and the other is obviously 2 years younger, but spoiled also. For some reason the 4 year old likes to walk and stop frequently to let the wind blow through her hair and to sniff at everything. The younger wants to go-go-GO! I've tried to link them both together so Kiwi (the younger) could take Cleo for the walk and I just have to supervise. Kiwi can outwalk Cleo any day. Probably 2 miles is my guess.:) |
I agree with everyone else. They will let you know when they are tired. I started walking Izzy around the block then gradually increased it. They will build up their stamina...just like humans do when they dont work out for a long time. When he is tired he will sit down and look at me like, "Okay lady, Im done!" :p |
