Going potty in crate I am sOOOOO frustrated! my little girl Duchess who is now 7 months old just is not getting it .She does not care if she pees or poo in her crate. I take her out side alot I tell her potty, and she goes, I take her out just before bed to her crate and she will still go in there. I feed her the second time at at 4:00 Pm and dont put her in the crate till at least 8:00. I dont know what to do. Has anyone ever been through this? I never had this problem with my boy Duke.:) :( |
i understand your frustration. i have a couple questions first before giving advise. How big is the crate? When you take her outside before bed does she do 1 & 2? Does she only do it at night in the crate? how long of a time is she in there? do you crate her during the day when your home or not home? how long are you going between potty breaks? |
Her Crate is just big enough to lay down and turn around, she does not seem to care if she lays in it. She is crated at night for about 6 hrs. And then again about 9:00 Am to 3:00 Pm while I work. Then she is free the rest of the times. Yes she will go in the crate at night and during the day. I try to make her go everytime she goes out before getting in the crate. Sometimes she will go and sometimes she wont. |
Can you leave her in a little bigger area, like an x-pen? You can put her crate in there and a potty pad next to it. |
You may need to take her out once during the night. All puppies are different, but it can take a while for their bladder muscles to get strong enough to hold it for a long time, even a couple hours. You can try leaving the crate door open and setting up a pen attaching each end to the front of the crate. That way you can put puppy pads and toys down outside the crate, but she can still snuggle in her crate and stay confined from the rest of the house. See if she uses the puppy pads. If she's peeing as soon as you put her in there or a few minutes after, it could be behavioral and I would suggest calling a trainer or behaviorist to get some advice. |
Yes I could put her in a bigger pen with a pee pad and I have thought of that but, I personally feel that then she would think its ok to go inside the house. When I bought her they where using pads, but that is something I would rather not do. My Boy Duke has always went outside, not at first but he is 99% trained now and he will NEVER go in the crate. I would much rather have her go out side to go. I also did not want to confuse Duke to think that if she goes on a pad then why does he have to go outside? |
She does not go right away when I put her in the crate so I hope it is not a behavior problem |
hmmm, ok what is her feeding schedule like? do you free feed or does she have set meals? and what is she eating? |
She has 2 set meals, 1st one in the morning and 2nd one at about 4;00 pm She has been eating Purina puppy chow since I have had her. thats what see was eating then. |
ok so its not like she's eating all throughout the day, so she shouldn't be poopin all throughout the day. she's in a small enough crate. and you do take her outside alot. Does she potty on the floor when she was free roam? The only thing i can sugguest outside of putting her in a ex-pen with a pee pad is to go back to square one and treat her like you just got her with strict food/outside/crate/free roam time. Sylvan explains it best on her site. This is what i did with morgan and she NEVER goes in her crate. read thru it and try it out. http://sylvanyorkies.com/puppycare.htm the housetraining part is almost half way down the page, but i'd read the rest of the info too because its really good. Stacy always has great information. |
I will read that. Thank you for your advice! Wish me good luck |
I think everyone else already covered the info you needed to know...So I'm just here to wish you good luck! :D |
