Potty trained but not housebroken -- next step ? My pup is 9 months old. She is potty trained outside and is pretty good when we are at home. At night she can hold it pretty good too. She is on feeding schedule. She potty first thing in the morning, mid day and at night after dinner. What I do not understand is why she keeps making mistake if I let her run the house while we are not at home ? she can hold it pretty good when we are at home. Currently I end up putting her in the crate when we are not at home but I am hoping that one day she can be fully housebroken and can run in the house while we are not at home. What is the next step ? |
Do you only take her out 3 times a day?? I am thinking she should be going out MUCH more than that. I would say you keep her more occupied when you are home, and when you are not there she gets bored.......and pees?? I really don't know. My lil guy is only 5 months, and I haven't left him alone in the house if we are not there .........he is crated, and I will continue to do that until he is AT LEAST a year old if not 2 yrs, and then I will probably STILL keep him in our kitchen area. Good luck, sorry I wasn't much help. |
i only take morgan out 3-4 times a day as well. she goes on in the morning before work. then at 4:30 after work, and then at 10 before bed. Only if she shows signs of needing to go out between 4:30 adn 10 do i take her out again. She doesn't have accidents in the house or in the crate. She is in her ex-pen while i'm not home and doesn't have accidents in there. I have yet to give her free roam while i'm not home. i'd feel like i'd have to puppy proof my room more so that she wont get into things unattended. who knows what they do while we're not home. so i'm with you. she's a year old today and i'm hoping to let her have free roam of my room soon (i live in the basement of my parents house and the room is very big with all my stuff in it so there are lots of thing she can get into if she really wanted to.) |

Maybe get an ex-pen to keep her in while you are away. That way she will be confined, but in a larger area than her crate. Also, have you thought of training her on pee pee pads so she can use them while you are gone? You could put one in her ex-pen and she would always be able to go even if you are not home to let her out. Just a thought. Hope it helps!:) |
It could be anxiety. I heard of dogs being completely house trained but when the owner left even just for 10 minutes they would end up having accidents due to their anxiety. Try getting an expen and using that to confine her. You can adjust the expen to different sizes, so you could start small and if she does well continue making the pen bigger and then try confining her to just one room in the house. I would also put a pad down so that if she did have to go and coulden't hold it she could go on the pad rather than have an accident on the floor. Good luck!! |
