Inside to Outside Any advice for getting my 5 month old who is paper trained to using the potty outside? I've taken him out every little bit and for 30 minutes or more at a time with his "big sis" Cindy. This has been going on all week. He has not peed or pooped yet. He'll come back inside, get a treat (I have to give him one cause Cindy gets one), eat it and then a few minutes later go straight to the paper and pee. I've even picked him up and said, "No, potty outside," and carried him back downstairs (two flights-I live in a 3rd floor apartment) and put him down and wait 10-15 minutes, and nothing. I would like to get him trained (when I first got him, I was taking him out and he was doing okay, but then he picked up some parasites and the vet urged me to keep him inside in a controlled environment until he finished all his shots and got bigger). I'd really appreciate any help from those that have tried this and succeeded. |
Great question!! I too would like help with this problem. My Britain is 100 % pad trained and will not potty outside to save her life. I am trying to work out how to teach her its ok to potty in both places so that when I am home and she needs to potty we can go out but when I am at work she can go on her pads. |
Chewie is almost 6 months old. I began training him to potty outside about 6 weeks ago. I started by offering him a treat immediately after he went. I had to play with him outside sometimes for 20-30 minutes before he went potty, but then brought him back inside immediately and offered a treat. I also made a really BIG deal out of it also--probably looked ridiculous. Any way, persistance is key. This past weekend he actually went to the back door and scratched to be let out--made a really, REALLY big deal out of that one. I think maybe he's getting the point. I know you have two dogs, but I don't think I would give your guy a treat unless he actually did something to earn it--like going potty outside. You might confuse him otherwise. He will learn quickly and it's a "call and response" treat. Good luck and hang in there. |
