The Little Carpet Terrors... We have two puppies, 5 months old, who terrorize wherever it is that we try to let them stay. We let them "have" the kitchen area, and they ate the woodwork and the cupboard door, plus tore up the carpet at the edge of their area. We then moved them to one of the bathrooms, where they tore up the door and the woodwork. Today we let them stay in one of the rooms... within 2 hours, while my wife and I were working in another part of our place, they had pulled up part of the carpet and torn up the padding. They have TONS of toys, we do spend a fair portion of the day with them... but we need a place for the two of them to "hang out" when we have other things we need to do. We don't necessarily want to put them in a kennel, but that may be what it takes. Any suggestions? |
You might try an expen (exercise pen) that would give them room to move around in more than a kennel but limit their access to woodwork and such. Just put it on the tile floor in the kitchen. Good luck. |
Mine is a climber, so x-pen didn't work well. When I couldn't trust her to be good, I'd put her in the kennel. Somone here told me about clear deoderant keeping them from chewing. Several said thats not good thing, so dunno, but putting the clear deoderant on many things in this kitchen, did deter her from going back to chew in the same spot. I also got a baby gate and pick out the kitchen for her to stay now when I'm out of the house. I got the type with bars, that she couldn't climb, but also had to put plexiglas on the front of it to keep her from walking inbetween the bars, lol. Seems she's always one step ahead of me! I have removed all the carpet in the living room and hall. Venus has ruined it. She's also chewed large holes in the lenolium in the kitchen. Both lenolium and carpet was put in back in 2000, so wasn't that old. I hope to order ceramic in the next day or 2. But strange part, she's 10 months old now, and soon as the carpet came up, she quit going on the floor where she'd been going! I also have baseboards that were just put down in June, she's chewed up. Must not have put enough deoderant on them. |
Are we talking about Yorkies or termites? :D My Zsa-Zsa is a chewer but I limit their time to free play. I supervise them constantly and when they start to chew on something I don't want them to I snap my fingers to get her attention and give her one of her toys. I may have to correct her a couple times but she starts using her toy and forgets the cabinet or baseboards. When I can't watch them they are in the x-pen and since Zsa- Zsa likes to climb I bought a 4x8 piece of lattice and place over the top of the pen so she can't escape. |
I would recommmend and have used an X-pen but on the top I have cut a tarp (from camping) to a little larger size then the top of the xpen, I put it over the top. Because my girl was smaller she did not have the strength to "lift" the tarp off the top and eventually stopped climbing and even trying. Just a thought! Kathy |
