Leash problems! My yorkie is about 4 months old and I have just started to put a leash on him when I take him outside but he seems to not like it. He will just sit there and not walk or try and fight me by pulling back a little. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, I have noticed that many of you put a harness on your yorkie. What is their purpose and why do you use them? :confused: |
Most people use harnesses on their yorkies because they have very delicate tracheas that can easily collapse from the pressure put on them by a leash. Also, harnesses are good because they allow you to pick them up easier if they get into some kind of danger. Some people don't use collars at all (they can get caught on things and easily choke your baby) and most use them just for their tags. Try the harness to help them walk. I can't guarantee that they will work, but I just ordered one because I was having the same problem and that was everyone's recommendation to me. Eons ago I wrote a post explaining how to use a target stick to teach a dog to walk on a leash. Please do a "search" for this post, I think it will help. I find that the target stick is one of the simplist and more stress-free ways of dealing with leash training problems. I agree with the poster about using a leash and collar to start out instead of a harness. A harness is good with a dog who has learned to respect the leash and collar and knows how to walk properly on a leash or in the instance where you WANT your dog to pull such as in the case of tracking, or carting. With a young dog who does not understand leash walking, a harness is NOT a good idea because it can lead to a dog who does nothing but pull you every where. |
Hello! This "leash" thing is the only thing BeanSprout does well. For the first few does, I put his collar on him with his leash dragging behind. That way he got used to it without the "pressure" to walk. Next on trips outside for fresh air, I would walk about ten feet in each direction with a treat in font of his nose. Now, a week later,I bought a harness and we walkin our neighborhood. Good Luck! Jen |
I Have A Few Dogs And They All Do The Same Thing As Puppies . Just Hang In There And Keep Trying A Little At A Time. Maybe You Can Make A Treat Trail Like The Wizard Of Oz.. Sometimes Food Is Your Best Motivator . Preplan Your Walk And Then Take Your Pup Out . I Like The Harness, With That You Can Almost Gently Lift Them Off Their Feet And Have Them Continue To Move When They Sit. Please Do Not Use The Collar If You Do Not Have To , Its To Risky And On The outside Of The House Where There Are Cars Sometimes They Slip Off The Neck If They Pull the Other Way . Otherwise You Might Have To Make It To Tight Not To slip off which can hurt them .. Good Luck Lin |
My yorkie at 4 months did the same thing. I thought something was wrong. I think they get tired easy, they are kind of scared about the whole walk thing, etc. Stomper would stop and wouldn't move or lay in the grass when I was trying to walk him! Now at 6 months...he loves them. Just don't give up. I tried a harness. Stomer did not like it, so I use a collar. It is good for smaller dogs though since the collar will pull on their neck. |
Gentle Leader We just started using this on Baxter instead of a regular collar. I now wouldn't use anything else! He was a puller on his collar. NOW, IMMEDIATELY he doesn't pull. He walks RIGHT where he is supposed to and stops when I stop. It's awesome! |
Are you all talking about leather harnesses', or is there something else. I'm so confused. :confused: |

You don't need a leash or collar to teach a dog to heel. Please look for my past post on target stick training. I explain how you can train a dog to heel using a target stick. There's a saying among obedience people - if you need a leash, your dog is not trained! |
