obsessed about a toy Layla is very obsessed about her soccer ball (only when the squeaky is still in tact) she is crazy with it and will fetch it until she is exhausted and then even more... we've started limiting her time with it to 30 min a day because she will just wear herself out.. she has started holding in her mouth while digging in her bed and will go until i tell her to stop... when she wants you to throw it she drops it andw ill stare at it intensly... she has now started doing this with her tennis ball (but only when it is outside) ... does anyone else's dog do this?? i think it is kinda sick how crazy she is about it.. but should i eliminate it all together?? she just loves them both so much. |
I thought my Faith was the only one like this. She has a million toys but the soccer ball is her favorite. She has a very strong prey drive and loves to chase, hunt, etc. I noticed whenever we took it away it made her worse. I used this to my advantage with training and I think that helped as well. However, since she now has three soccer balls and we let her go crazy with it she no longer is as obsessed with it as she use to be. It seems as if the more you take it away the more obsessed she got. This worked really well for us but I'm sure there are other things you can do as far as training I'm sure. |
for a while she was allowed to have ti as long as she wanted.. she's gone through 3 of these and the squeaky usually lasted one day and then she more or less lost interest.. but with this new one she didn't break the squeak so for about 3 days on end she went insane with it.. my dad was concerned.. lol... so we took it away... i wish i knew what the right things to do was!! |
1 Attachment(s) Buddy has a rubber clown that he is intensly in love with. It is his very favorite toy which I bought for him three years ago when I brought him home. He would GUARD it at times and hide under the chair and growl if I went near it. Much more threatening than what your little one does. I ignored him but he would prance around the house with it in his mouth and just growl to hear himself. It got better when I ignored him and finally he started leaving it alone but if I walk by it he runs to protect it. It is starting to fall apart and I am worried he will get depressed when the time comes to bury it. Believe it or not I went back to the same store and bought another one and he ignores it. Wants nothing to do with it. He really loves this rubber clown and gets comfort from it for whatever reason. He will bring it to me but won't release it. Don't die clown! |
oh he is TOO cute with that clown... so you think i shoudl just give it back to her?? and ignore it? |

AprilLove is the same way with her soccer ball. She could play fetch all day if I had the energy:D Remember when you were a little girl, did you not have a favorite toy??:p :p I know mine was a Jolly Green Giant stuffed doll that I got through mail order by saving box tops. I named him "Jolly" (originality is not my strongest suit lol) My older brother slapped his head off one day and I cried and cried. My mom finally sewed his head back on and I think I had that doll until I was 16 (although I didn't play with it at 16:eek: ) Edited to say: Don't feel bad for me, I have since gotten over my obsession with the jolly grean giant!!!! LOLOLOL |

This is more of a question than advice... Do you all keep toys away from your pups or let them have them all the time. I guess I never thought about a designated play time or toy. All Buddahs toys are available to him all the time. Is that bad? |
Brownie is the same way with his handball ! it must be a yorkie thing cause my other 2 do not do that! |

Spanky loves the $ 400 lazer on hubbys gun he will wine and cry at the closet for us to get it out. then if we do get it he goes nuts and runs after it till he ready to drop he even ran into the leg on the pool table head first. I dont want hm playing with it anymore after that. |
We have a Border Collie that is OBSESSED about any ball...tennis, golf, pine cone , whatever . We have to throw it a million times in a row. It is very annoying after awhile, especially when she barks (very loudly and piercing) if we don't play with her. It is truly an obsession and is a negative trait in her. When we have company over, we cannot let her have the ball because she will not let anyone have a minute to themselves. I saw a Dog Whisperer show about this also. |
Awwww, they have favorites just like us :) Bobbi doesn't have a favorite toy but he does get 'posessive' with bully sticks. I always give the poodle and him each a new one. Well, he has his.......goes off and hides it and comes and barks at the poodle until she gives hers up  At times, he will put a paw over one while gnawing on the other. Breaks my heart because the poor poodle will sit there and salivate the entire time just thinking about how it tastes :( I am teaching him to share the bully sticks and that ONE is more than enough for each. I love both of them equally. I wouldn't allow the poodle to do that to him so I will not allow him to do that to her. Furkids are like human children.........:) |
yes Layla is very possessive over bully sticks... she isn't allowed to have them anymore :p |

Yes, Jack is very obsessed with his ball. All :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork love to play fetch. Jill is the only one that will bring it back. They do get worn out. I have at times had to take the balls away because of agressive behavior between Jilly and Kenzi. We have a toy crate that is available all the time. Every day they drag all the toys throughout the house and every night I pick them all up. I even have to plan the pick-up when they are outside otherwise they want to play with each toy as I pick it up. |
Yes my Pippa is like this too, in the end we have to hide all her toys for while for her to get some rest. |
lol this is funny,my :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork have a little red mouse and we call it the oh no toy,we no we have to throw it for at least 20 mins untill they wear them selfs out, so cute to see watch them all play together.the other toys them just sniff and walk by them.:) |

Chloe too had a soccer ball until two days ago when she ATE one of the octogons off of it. So it is resting at the bottom of the trash can. |
Nathan love his soccer ball and Frimousse found the joy of playing with a little basket ball . Jade loves to tease them . |
Grayson has a stuffed dog that is almost as big as he is, he stole it from my youngest son,and now claims it to be his. He however is gentle with the dog and will shake him and drag it over the house. I think he knows if he puts a hole in it doggie will go to the grave yard. |
I wonder if reverse psychology would work on a dog. What if you got her a whole bucket full of the same toy, and everytime the dog turned around, you held one out to her and practically forced it on her? Would that make the dog get sick of it and want nothing to do with it? I dunno. It might be worth a try. |

She brings her ball to bed and will roll on her back next to it. Sometimes she pounces on it and bats it around with her paw like a cat. She's a crazy little dog. |

If we take the ball from her, she runs around the house frantically looking for it. A few times she has torn apart her ball and we've had to throw it away. Since we couldn't get the store to buy another one soon enough, she began to substitute one of her smaller stuffed toys for the ball. She now understands "bring it closer" when she doesn't drop her ball close enough so that helps a little. I guess my thing is that her ball is the joy of her life. It's such a simple pleasure that it's so hard for me to deny her it. If only human pleasure could be as simple as a tiny tennis ball. |
Pepper has all his toys out at all times. I used to put away his fishy, a big stuffed animal that wasn't too sturdy and when he started shaking it the white stuffing started coming out from holes (the fabric was not a dog proof :( ). Well, I caught my dog eating the white stuffing  and occassionally, he's start humping it too. In the trash the fishy went but he'd sit down and stare intently at the wardrobe - that's where I used to hide it lol. I could tell he was getting a little fixated on that fish |
My Sammie has OCD with balls. She goes absolutely crazy with it. She'll even let out a crazy laugh when I try to move it away from her. No use trying to hide it around the house because she has a nose like a blood hound and will cry and cry for the ball once she locates it and it's out of her reach. It takes team work to hide the ball from her: my daughter takes her into her bedroom with the door shut while I hide the ball in the garage. ;) |
Omg!!! My booboo is just like that all balls in the house are his if one of the other dogs even touch it he goes into a frenzy until he gets it back... And same as yours if he wants me to throw it he will stare at it then back at me then he backs up a little and keeps doing that until I throw it.. He can go for hours and hours he is completely obsessed. |
