What is the best age to introduce a doggie door? Hi! We have a Pug who is almost 3 and Sophie, our Yorkie, who is about 3 1/2 months old and we are considering a doggie door to help with Sophie's potty training. Has anyone had any luck using a doggie door? If so, is she too young to start using a doggie door? |
I never let mine outside unless I'm with them. I kept them in the expen attached to the wire crate for a couple of months with wee-wee pad down and took them outside every hour. They never had run of the house till they were totally house trained. They go to the door when they want out, but when we can't take them, they stay in the kitchen breakfast area with a wee-wee pad down just in case they need it, which they haven't for a year now. This is for their protection. |
I think you are right. While we were outside today she tried to escape! She is just too precious to risk it. I think Bosley our Pug would be ok using the door but I'd rather be safe than sorry:) |
I got my two girls at 9 weeks and they learned the doggie door within 3 days. |
We just had an article in our local paper about Doggie Doors. Three "young adult " males managed to wiggle themselves thru the person's doggie door and then into their house, while these people were sleeping. Long story short, the police got them. If I remember right, I think the people had a medium size dog, but still that's scary... |
Our deck is fenced in and thats where Banjo does his business. We got a doggie door and within 2 mins Banjo was using it. Its so much better now i don't have to get up and down to let him outside, even though we trained him to ring the bell. |
Thank you for the good information! |
i would definitely use a doggie doog if I had a fenced-in yard with a safe, checked privacy fence around. But still, would keep Pepper in (I think you can block the doggie door?) if I'm not home. |
Our neighbor had a doggie door........ until one night she turned on the kitchen light to get a drink of water and discovered a racoon had come in the house and was eating the dog's food. Very scary! Racoons can be mean! Needless to say they do not use the doggie door anymore!;) |

I have a doggie door and it is awesome!! Had to get one because Cody just was not getting the potty training. Once we installed it we had not trouble at all. Now Izzy (18 weeks) goes in and out all day as she wants to. I just have to keep an eye on her inside as she still hasn't figured out that "outside" is where her business should be done. |
We purchased a doggie door when Xena was 5 months old. We have a 6ft block wall surrounding our yard with no possibility for escape. It took her a couple of weeks to get used to it. At first we had to prop the swinging part open but then we trained her to use that too. She just has to go out so much (little bladder I guess) that this was so nice to have. Plus it makes a noise when she goes out and comes in so I can keep an eye on her. |
