potty training Any potty training tips? Chip always pees at the most random times and most of the time we can't catch it. After he drinks water he'll take a few steps back and automatically pees. How can we teach him how to let us know when he needs to go outside and to make him actually do his business out there? |
I see that Chip is only 8 weeks, so you are just starting. Take him out every hour. If he poos INSIDE, grab the poo and bring it outside (with the puppy) and show him where it's suppose to go. Since it's nice outside, it's best to let him play outside more. |
Sorry I clicked too soon!!!! Since it's been mid 40's and low 50's and sunny, my lil guy has been LOVING it on our deck in the sun. That sped up our potty training too!!! I am a big fan of JUST OUTSIDE training, even if he doesn't have all his shots.......it's their natural place to go. Just watch him closely so he doesn't get into any other poo until hes had all his shots. Consistency is the KEY, every half hour when he's awake. I am thinking if he drinks his water and then pees right away, it's been too long since you last had him out!!?!? I fortunately had a fast learner, he just turned 4 mos. and he already goes to the door when he has to pee. Oh, one thing I did learn (late in the game) was to have your puppy WALK to the door himself. If you carry him outside he won't realize that the DOOR is the place to go. Good luck!!!! |
It will take some time. We brought Bailey home at 8 weeks old and it has been exactly 6 weeks today since he came to live with us. His accidents are not like when he first came home, but he dose still have them (one so far today). Some puppies need to go out every hour, but Bailey needed to go out quite a bit more than that....it just really depends on each puppy. He was having a ton of accidents but, like I said, he has gotten better. He had no accidents yesterday and none the day before and the one that he had today was right against the back door. Chances are he was scratching or whining and we just didn't see him. Just give it some time and you will start to see improvements with each week! We even took Bailey to my parent's house last night and he went to their door to let me know that he needed to go potty...we were so proud. :) Your little guy will get it, too. Tammy |
We take him outside all the time. Everytime he seems to be sniffing around we take him out... when he wimpers we take him out... over every little thing. The problem with having him walk to the door is that we live in a townhouse and he is scared to go down steps. We've been taking him outside through the basement because there is a fence there and more of a yard. And right now, we'll take him out, stand outside for 10-15 minutes and all he does is walk around. The second we take him back inside, he does his business. Maybe it's too cold for him right now... ? We still have snow on the ground. |
OH.........and be sure to have a special word. Ours is simply "POTTY" and when I brought him to go Potty, I said "POTTY" and when he went potty I said "Good Potty" and sometimes I even kept saying it OVER AND OVER AND OVER as we were outside..........My pup understood the word POTTY at about the 4-5 day mark.........and then he would go POTTY on command, and I STILL say POTTY all the time!! I wouldn't blame it on the cold weather, when we got our guy (mid-January in Minnesota) it was about 20 degrees (he had never been out EVER until I took him home) and about 1.5 weeks after we got him, we had a SUPER COLD SPELL that lasted about 2 weeks, and it sometimes didn't get above Zero, and let me tell you.........he learned VERY fast that all he had to do was POTTY and he could go back in the warm house. Consistency, consistency consistency with your WORDAGE AND going out. PLUS TONS OF PRAISE. My lil guy STILL gets treats pretty much all the time when he potties.........they are very TREAT MOTIVATED.........try that!!!!! He will realize that by going POTTY he gets REWARDED!!! |
We try to say "go potty" but for the first couple days we didn't have any treats to reward him because we didn't know he couldn't have dry food (long story) and were looking for something softer that he would eat. |
How about Honey Nut Cheerios? My two will do anything for a cheerio:) |
I take mine out every 1-2 hours to go potty. It really has worked. Then I have a potty pad inside. Lola (my youngest..she is a Morkie) very rarely potties inside. If she does it is usually a poo poo and always in the same 2 spots. WHen she goes outside I praise her realllly overdramatically to let her know how proud I am. She is now 14 weeks and I would say 80% housetrained. My Yorkie very rarely goes inside off of her potty pad. She goes outside or on her pad 97% of the time. Neither of them are fond of going outside when wet or cold so they usually use the pad then:) |
Oh, one thing I did learn (late in the game) was to have your puppy WALK to the door himself. If you carry him outside he won't realize that the DOOR is the place to go. [/QUOTE] Ah thanks for that tip! I always carry mine to the door! I will try that. My big dog rings a bell we have hung on the door when he has to potty. But he potty trained in ONE DAY when he was just 8 weeks old. I have found my 2 small ones have been a lot more challenging. My 1st Yorkie ever...a little male NEVER EVER potty trained. No matter what I did. I could have walked him for 1 hour and he would come right back inside and take a poop. He would not go on pads either. |
I am right along with most of you potty training. My little guy is 6 months old and he can be outside for a couple of hours (his choice) and then come in the house and pee or poo. Have tried everything. He is getting better but it is a slow process. He is very smart on most everything else. Like he refuses to come in when the other dogs come in but when he decides he wants in, he will run to the door and scratch to come in. So he is just stubborn on the potty training. He would not use pee pads or papers. I tell my hubby it is because he is a boy |
