From inside to outside... I've had my Yorkie, Bianca, for about 4 months. I got her in November and we had a really harsh winter, so every time I tried to take her outside, she wouldn't go to the bathroom outside. So I was using peepee pads inside and if I put her directly on it when I KNEW she had to go, she'd pee on it. She's never pooped or peed on them on her own accord. So, now that its warm, I want her to start going to the bathroom outside ALL THE TIME and no more going in the house... she's ruining my carpet! I take her outside frequently, but I think she just gets so excited to go outside that she won't go while she's out there, she just wants to run and play. She pees outside sometimes, but she's never pooped outside. I don't know what to do, and it's driving me crazy!! What do I do to get her to stop going in the house and start going outside? |
Try putting some of her poop outside, and nextime she has to go, maybe she'll go out there. I'm sorry I can't be of more help. Welcome to YT!!! |
take her out every hour and give her a word like"potty" as a signal to go. sooner or later she will go, then praise and reward. Keep the puppy in an area that you can monitor for accidents unless she is with you and you watch constantly. You now have to retrain her. The secret is to take her out regularly. It is time consuming, but with patience she'll get the idea. I took two weeks after I got our puppy and never left the house while training him. It was worth it because I have a reliable 10 month old. The problem with pads are that the puppy is allowed to go potty in the house and it causes them confusion. Why can they go in one spot and not another. I know that it is necessary for some people to paper or litter train, but if you have the time and access to the outside, I think it's bestto outside train. My puppy was 2 lbs. when I brought him home in September and was litter trained. I hated it and immediately started outside training. We had ( and still have) a lot of snow on the ground and my puppy doesn't care if it is cold or snowy, he goes on command and in less than 2-3 minutes so he is not at risk. He now weighs 3 lbs., so they can get used to going outside even in the snowiest and coldest climates. |
thanks for the advice, I'll get started on that right away! She's a pretty fast learner most of the time, hopefully it'll be the same with potty training! this is my girl!! Bianca |
We are training our girl to go outside now too, since it is no longer so cold. We've had to monitor her closely and also take her outside regularly. As soon as she wakes up from a nap, we take her out, and if she's had a drink of water, we take her outside. The minute we let her out of her crate in the morning, we don't even put her down on the floor, we carry her outside and put her down there. Then we consistently reward her each time with a treat (or two) and give her lots of praise. |
Here's to us I'm trying to get Sparky to go from inside to outside too. I live in an apartment, so I've kept him inside after he picked up tapeworms from outside. He's 18 weeks old and he had started begging to go out when I walk his big "sister" Cindy. So I bought him a harness and he does great. He hasn't pottied outside yet, but he walks great on the leash, and looks like such a big boy. He's even mastered coming up the two flights of stairs on his own. (I won't dare let him walk down the stairs). But I think with a lot of patience and consistency, we'll master this new challenge. He's such a sweetie. |
Milo is about the same age--18 weeks---he took it upon himself to try the stairs in our house. He runs up them and we die laughing when he comes down because he has to balance his butt in the air on the way down each step. He's careful and getting faster every day. Back on topic: He was doing his biz outside like a champ for two days and then came 18" of snow. Oh well--soon to try again. |
I live in the Syracuse area. I feel your pain. I'm tired of getting up at 5:00 am to shovel a spot for the dog to go! Will this winter ever end? |
Thanks for all the great advice! Of course, more horrible timing, Bianca is getting spayed on Friday so I'll have to give her a few more days of accidents after that. But it's all business on Monday! Good luck to everyone else, I no longer feel like such a potty training failure ;) |
i had put a wee pad outside so now she does both.. |
I've been taking Sparky outside with his "big sis" for about a week now. So far no luck getting him to potty out there. He loves the walk, and gets really excited when I get the leashes out. He'll walk so good and I've kept them out for 15 minutes or more, and shortly after we get back inside, he goes to his paper and pees. This morning I even took some paper that he had peed on outside and put it on the ground, but no luck. But I'm not giving up, he'll master it, I just have to be a good parent and "catch" it in time. It makes it hard cause I live in a third floor apartment, and have to ruuunnnn down the stairs when I see him head towards the paper. Wish me luck, and if anyone has any ideas that worked..........send them our way. |
yes it is harder since you live on the third floor....... just wait it out, when you do take sparky outside and he finally pottys out there, praise he to no end and maybe he will know for next time...good luck to you |
oh I feel your pain!! I live in a condo on the 3rd floor and it is NOT fun getting up at night or really any time to take Bianca out. She just finished puppy training school and it's so frustrating that she learned to sit, go down, roll over, come when called ... but she can't pee outside no matter how often we try! I've resorted to having to put her in her kennel whenever she's not in my lap basically, and taking her out like once an hour. Good luck! |
