"Grassy" area for pottying on patio So my kiddos are trained to use the doggy door when they are home alone. In my current house they have the patio and they go on the patio and i just clean it up.. well it's getting to be a hastle, and it stains the patio.. and smells if i dont clean it at least once a week. I'm moving to my new condo next week and will ONLY have a patio. So here is my idea.. i need some opinions. What if I get a large planter thingy a good two feet wide and streatches across the entire patio... and get sod in there and make a "grassy" area for them, and set it up to drain and everything so they can pee on there. Or to do planter thingy but with rocks so they will go on there, rather than the patio. They will have the inside to play and then doggy door to the patio to go out and do their thang' :D Anyone ever done this or have any insight? |
will they go on a pad if you put that on your patio?? |
no, they are not pee pad trained.. and I honestly dont want to use any pee pads.. I dont like them |
There are several companies that sell those things, so they must be having success with them or they wouldn't sell. It sounds like a good idea to me. Remember if you get real grass you will have to keep it cut. Some of the ones I saw had a drainage drawer you could pull out and empty and some had a pee pad underneath to catch the drainage. Let us know how it works out. |
i remember someone a while back posting about doing something similar and complained about how much trouble that was to keep clean and from smelling. |

Since they are used to going on concrete, I wonder if they will use the grass or continue to use the concrete. I have the same situation, and if we don't get rain to wash it down, then I use the hose and squeege. But I have thought about extending it out into the lawn a few feet. I like being able to just sweep up the poop. |
I've used the Pup-Head Potty since Feb.8th and it works wonderfully. I had mine inside right next to the sliding door going to our deck while the weather was so cold, but now that the weather has broken I put it out on my deck and the little fellow goes just as if it were inside (teaching him to ring the bell to go out). I put newspaper or a piddle pad in the bottom to minimize clean up. Our babies are so small that accumulation is not a real problem and this is great. Just wash the grass and the tray down with hose as often as you feel you need to or wash it in the bathtub. If you are going to start inside, I would put the potty where is is visibale if there is a glass door so they can see it when they approach the door to go out and eventually move it to where you want it after he gets used to going to it. Good luck! |
Wouldn't it just be easier to hose it down daily? My 3 use the patio on the weekends and when Dan is home and we just hose it off (really good) and I use diluted Simple Green once a week with a push brush. Takes less than 10 minutes to clean the patio. To me the sod with a pan seems more unsanitary. You have urine collecting until it's emptied and washed, and that's going to mixed with soil. Just sounds like more headache than it's worth. At least with a piddle pad, it gets picked up daily. |
thanks for the links. Well the reason is, i'd still like to be able to walk outside without having to dodge the pee/poop. Plus, it has stained my concrete really bad. I hate it. I want them used to going on grass, not on the concrete really |
Here's a couple of the grass potty areas for condos and apt decks: http://www.cosmopolitancanine.com/faqs.htmhttp://www.cosmopolitancanine.com/faqs.htm http://www.doggienews.com/2005/01/pe...-dog-potty.htmhttp://www.doggienews.com/2005/01/pe...-dog-potty.htm |
