How can I stop her from running away???? Everytime Hannah gets a chance she runs out the door and runs away. She will not listen to me. I will have to chase her down to catch her. She will not stop. I can see how so many yorkies get run over by cars because if there was a car on our road it would have hit her. Today she ran out the door and she just kept running and running and running. She literally ran about 1/4 mile before I caught up with her by the RR tracks... . Here I go running through my neighborhood in Pj pants and a t-shirt (no bra mind you, boobs floppin') and house shoes. I was so mad at her that I wanted to strangle her. We have a fenced back yard but I would like for her to be able to be in the front yard with me sometimes with out running away. Do all yorkies run away? She minds me if we are in the house but if she is outside she is a crazy idiot! Anyone else have this problem? |
My advise is to make sure the lock is always on the door and all family members make sure the door is shut tight when they are coming or going. My yorkie is still a pup 3 months and I keep his lease on him whenever he is out of the crate. I always can find him by looking for the lease. When I take him outside he is always led by the lease. |
I put a baby gate on the front door. Not sure it's training them properly, but it sure stops them from running out. |
You need to teach her the stay command. That will allow you to open your front door without her taking off. How old is Hannah? When Chachi was younger he used to do the same thing. Then he was one or maybe a little older than that My Husband started taking him out of the yard to walk a short distance. Sometimes he would act like he was going to run off and My Husband would call him and he came back. He kept doing that with him and now at two years old we could take him anywhere off leash. You need to start by teaching her commands first where she gets used too listening to you and responding to commands. . Then she will also listten to you when you call for her My other dog Jewels we have always been able to take off leash but she is more of a follower. |
I kind of have that problem with Truffles...she is not yet 6 months...but I know what I have to do to fix it, so hopefully it won't be too hard. She is in puppy class right now so she is learning commands. They say to always keep your baby on the leash - let it drag behind them around the house! Then you can quickly correct her with a tug on the leash along with the command, as well as step on the leash alot easier when they wanna run! With the leash on, you can practice opening the door and making her stay "inside" then you walk out and tell her to "stay" while tugging your leash, if need be. Scary to have to chase them huh? And mine thinks its a game so she just runs faster! The other day I had her in the backyard and she does not yet know what a pool is! But I had her leash and let her go be curious...she walked right into the pool!! I was able to pull her back so just her paws got wet, but I think she has to do that to know that she doesn't want to do that! Vixxen knows the pool and she runs free in the back with no problem :D |

I think shes a little young yet. When Chachi was that age he would run to. It was about one year old where we had the break threw with him. By that time he also really knew commands. My Husband started by using treats and telling him he command and using hand signals to using no treats to using a clicker. Come is definitely a command you want to teach. It sounds like she has a good understanding of stay though and thats a hard one to teach. Its just really come in handy to us we can oen our gate to bring groceriies in the house and our dogs be out in the yard and they dont go anywhere. We have even taken them off leash at events where there were other dogs. |

Duh! I forgot my no fail trick!! If you can keep a plastic container or something to hold treats in, near you or at least near the front door....I got Truffles to know that when I shake that container and say "come" she leaves anything to run back to me!! She knows the noise = yummy! Trust me on this one....we were at a park last weekend with at least 40 other Yorkies running around, and when we shook that treat jar, she left all her playmates and ran right to us!!! Try it ;) |
I would not trust any command or leash or anything ujntil i was sure she was trained. It on;ly takes a second. Keep a cate across the front door, or make sure there is a gate between the dog and the door. Mine stay really well. I started by just pushing them back with my foot and saying stay. Now they stay, just on command. But I have a fenced patio and I live on an acreage. if I lived in town I would not risk it. EVER. It's much easier to step over a gate, than to chase down a dog. |
I have the ex-pen set up where they can't get out the door when it's open. Better safe than sorry. Put her in a harness and start training her the proper way to go out the door. She has to sit till you say ok. Never let her go first. Always beside you. She needs some basic obedience like sit and stay. It doesn't take long to teach those either and could save her life. |
When Lewie is old enough I will try that with the plastic container with treats, a good trick, better than the stair gate one with us as he is so small he can get through the gaps, and been told he will not get much bigger :D , so lucky for him treats it is then ;) |

We just learned this in our intermediate class at petsmart. It is called the wait command (different from stay). Start out not doing it at the door--just in the room. Put her on her leash. Have her sit, then move your finger to one side and say wait. Drop the leash. Back away a few steps and do the finger and "wait" again. After you back up a few more steps, then tell her "okay, come". Do that over and over, lengthening the time before you allow her to come. Then practice it at the door, saying "wait" again as you start to guardedly open the door. Then praise and treat. Of course, it takes lots of practice. good luck :) |
I forgot to add...when they run, never chase them because then it becomes a game of chase to them and they will keep running. |

Well I say keep trying so she learns what it means. You may have to find a treat that she is just crazy for....mine will do anything for toddler baby chicken hotdogs! Though I try not to give them too many....and they don't shake in the container, you can put other kibble in there just to make the noise and then reward with her favorite...whatever miss finicky favors that is!!:D |

All good suggestions in above posts. The come command is really important. It can save their little lives (not to mention, make it easier on you!). Practice the come command every day!! In the house, in your fenced yard, everywhere. I started by rewarding AprilLove every time she came or looked at me when I said her name. Soon, I added April Come" and I would do it even if I went up my stairs or go into another room (although most of the time, they are glued to my feet anyway, hehe) and she would run to me. I always reward this. Now, I just say come and she stops what she is doing and comes right to me. And I still treat some of the time, but not every time, I like to keep them guessing hehe. Carry treats with you in your pockets, even at home. She will get it. |
I havn't done it yet but have considered one of those little contraptions that makes sound that dogs don't like. you can place then hwere you need them and set them for whatever distance you need and the dog will not go to where that sound is. I thought it might be a good thing to try by the door as we are on a quiet dead end but right at the end of it where it meets the main street and cars travel pretty fast up that street. If Teddy got out and ran like a crazy man he would almost definately get hit. It really scares me and I would rather rely on something that makes the decision for him rather than relying on him to listen at a moment when he might be too excited to think. Otherwise I like the gate idea as well. Kim |
 Im having the same prob with lola, she is almost 6months now and ive done the whole running around the street thing in my nightwere:cool: ! We are at the stage now where we can open the door and she will stay unless she see's our cat outside...then it's all too exciting to stay in! We have the treats in a pot we shake and it works when she is off her lead on our local field...but if any people walk buy she's off and no longer listening!!!! Im not sure how to get her out of that one!:( :doghop: |
