Is litter box training possible? I was just curious since we have cats and the litter boxes are already around-can you box train a Yorkie? I don't use clay litter- we use Feline Pine and our little boxes are very shallow. |
Mine uses a litter box. He prefers newspaper lining in the box. I bought one from Walmart that was actually for cats but it is big enough for him. He uses his box every time unless we are out for walks and he does it outside. |
We use a doggie litter box with a wee-wee pad inside. I wouldn't use the same box for both your Yorkies and cats though. |
We know someone that is a trainer that says he can litter box train dogs. |
My 2 didn't go for the litter box, they kept taking out the pellets to play with them or eat them as snacks.. :( |
thanks for the tips. Won't use the cat's litter boxes or the litter- I like the newspaper or pee pad ideas in the box. I just figured it would be a nicer presentation then a pee pad out on the floor. |
A friend of mine trained her Maltese mix to use a litter box and it worked beautifully except for the litter that would be a bit messy on the floor, but she kept the broom and dust pan handy. I'd say what ever works for you. I use wee-wee pads if it's pouring rain and when staying in motels. Taking a pan with litter with us doesn't sound too good to me. ;) I'd rather shake the poo in the pot and throw the pad away. :p |

I do not have any cats if that is what you meant. Its just the litter box I bought was made for cats but it worked for my boy. |

hehe:) sorry. Half of the time, I talk using Asian English :D |
We bought the Purina dog litter box for Wrigley. We use pee pee pads in it, not the pellets. She took to it right away and it's worked great! |
We had been using the purina litter boxes with pee pads in, but Tucker decided to start lifting his leg and now he can pee over the top, ugh. It seems like every time I find a solution to a problem, he finds a way to create a new problem. I now have deeper Steralite containers so he can't lift his leg high enough to pee out of it. I'm sure he'll come up with some way to out smart me on that solution, too  Good luck! Julie and Tucker :aimeeyork |

I've had my baby for about 3 months and as soon as I got her home I opted for the litter training. I bought a smaller box when she was tiny and moved on to a longer/wider box since then. I buy the Purina doggie litter and it works GREAT! I've tried the pee pads, and Bailey only rips them up, and does her business next to them  . She did try to eat the litter at first but with training and the word NO alot she got the idea. It's a potty.. not food. I change the litter every 2/3 days and there isn't any smell. When she poops I give her a treat, wipe her butt, and flush it right away. She won't go in the litter unless it's clean. So yes, I feel after 3 months of getting Bailey to go in the litter, she is a master! And thank god.. NO messes on the carpet! :D |
Ive been using the litter box for bandit, it works really well. I tried the pee pads and he just shreds them all day long. I use the Puppy Go Potty Litter. Its made of 100% recycled paper and its biodegradable so if they do happen to chew on it, it wont hurt them. www.puppygopotty.com |
I just started training Keely to go in the litter box with the litter. We had her going in the box with a wee wee pad and she was doing great. Today we added a little bit of litter and she thought it was some new treat and was eatting it. But from what I've read from you ladies who have used the litter with telling her no she'll finally understand that the litter is a potty and not a treat. Some people think that you should train your dogs to go outside, but when you live in an apartment its just so much easier for myself and her to go potty. |

When you guys say litter box, is it the actual box? With roof and everything? I bought something that's for puppies but it looks like just the bottom half. More like a big plastic container tray with a little lowered opening. Anyways, I have another problem that I hope you guys can help me with.... I use wee wee pads and Sammie is 100% potty trained. BUT many times, he'll put his two front feet on the pad and pees....well then the pee misses and it is wet all around the wee wee pad. Obviously he doesn't know what he is doing wrong so I don't punish him. Are there any tricks to make him touch ALL fours on the wee wee pad so he never misses? I tried with the litter box and still, same thing...he places two front paws in the box with his rear side sticking out PLEASE HELP! |
My lil ones just kept playing with the paletts. But now they are paper trained. |

Once you have them though maintenence is next to nothing. I figured with the prices I was paying for littler and pee-pads weekly, in the long run, I save money going with this. There is a similar design to this, it doesn't have the sod/grass on it and the draining system isn't as a high tech but it's only 40.00! http://www.citystreetmarket.com/DogLitterBox.html |
Litter Box Please think very carefully before you decide on this method. Yes is it possible to litter box train these little guys, but I have encountered a few drawbacks and am hoping we can retrian Biggie to the outside. First is the cost of the large bags is about $15.00 and each bag lasts us about a week. Biggie will only use it if has very little urine in it. If it is not he will use the carpet. Second he is a male and stands one foot in and one foot out and his aim is not always that great, so I'm always cleaning up in front of the box. We live in New England and the only place I can seem to obtain the litter is at Pet Smart or Pet Co. and sometimes they are just out of it. The upside is that it is great when there is a few feet of snow outside or for someone who is in an apt. Anyway I hope I havent been too discouraging. Depending on your situation it may be a good choice for you. |

Do they sell the Puppy go Potty in stores or just online? I am using the Purina one at this time. Well I'm trying anyways. I've only had Holly for 3 days. She seems to love the puppy pads, but not for their intended purpose. She'll play with it, lay on it, and drag in around and then she'll go right next to it. I did think this litter was a bit too big. That is why I was asking about the Puppy Go Potty one. |
Blondie-that pet potty system looks like it uses real grass- do you use real grass or the fake grass? The system that is $40.00- it looks like you could zip tie the fake grass to the top & then just hose it off for cleaning & replacement. |
