Yorkies and "Chasing" Cats: Help Please
 
I brought my 14 week old Yorkie home this weekend. His name is BeanSprout, and he is a big boy almost 5 lbs. I have two 14/15 lb Ragdoll cats. The transition is not going well. AT ALL. BeanSprout has taken to hunting the cats. Oh yeah, we also barks louder tham a St. Bernard!!

All you experts out there: how do I get control of this situation??? My husband is furious that I brought a puppy home to disturb "HIS" cats.

I just hope that everyone will peacefully co-exist one day.

I know it may seem early but I would put him on a leash and correct him everytime he does it. I have had a similar problem but she just wants to play.
You may want to just let the leash dangle from him if he is not use to it. That way it is easier to grab him I know they are fast as lightning. Good Luck

I got my boy in the winter time (the season when my moms cats were let inside)..... toby just had a problem because he wanted to plaay and the cat didnt like him jumping all over her (she normally loves dogs, but for some odd reason she didnt like toby standing on her..... go figure :confused: ) so i sort of had the same problem.... eventually he learned to let her alone because i let her swat at him a couple times.....

I am going to try the leash thing... Also, I will let the cats swat at him. Awww. I hope it works :)

I deal with this on a daily basis... When Im leaving the cat in or out.. IT IS ON!! So I have resorted to the squirt bottle or a fly swatter to distract the dog long enough,, so the cat can come in or out.. Otherwise the dog, latches onto either the cats ears or tail!! :eek:

We have 2 indoor cats (13 yrs old). The female cat will only go near Bella when Bella is sleeping or in her lay down mood. She won't have anything to do with her otherwise as Bella just chases her and the girl cat doesn't want to be bothered.

The boy cat on the other hand got real upset when Bella first came and started hissing a lot, he never hissed once before she came. Bella would chase him all over the place and the cat would just run and hide. Finally the boy cat decided this was his house too and started batting Bella. He has no claws in front so I let him as it was his way of protecting himself and Bella would keep going back for more. Now they play this way every single day until the cat sasy "Enough" and goes to a high place.

I had the same problem with Reagan and our two cats. I pretty much just had to let Reagan learn that the cats don't like it. I know my cats very well though and know that they aren't going to hurt her, although I'm sure most cats aren't going to hurt a little dog they are just going to do enough to get away. One of my cats will just run and jump to higher ground the other will swat but for some reason only uses his claws when he's playing with us humans (I guess he's trying to tell us something).
Just watch your pup and let the cats take care of themselves a couple times(just make sure they don't go too far). Your pup will learn that cats don't play the same way dogs do and you'll be surprised how quick your dog will start playing with the cats like cats (batting at them and such).
