First night home, Buster drove me nights through the night. We brought 10 week old Buster home yesterday and wow, we are so in love with the little guy. He drove me absolutely crazy last night though. We got him a little bed and he wouldnt sleep in it for more then 20ish minutes. He would wake up and start crying until we brought him up to the bed and put him to sleep. This process was repeated about 5 times until I finally gave up and brought his little doggy bed up to my bed, and he slept a few hours with me and my girlfriend. Is this normal for a 10 week old? I felt so bad hearing him cry throughout the night and trying to leap up on the bed. |
where did you end up buying buster from? its sounds like normal puppy behavior 2 me.. esp in this cold weather.. they like the warmth of the bodies and being close to their new parents |

The behavior is absolutely normal. Buddy did that for 4mos until I gave in and allowed him to sleep with me. It has been peaceful since then. He only wants to be with you. Pups don't like being alone and need to be close to you. Enjoy as long as he dosen't go potty in the bed which they usually don't go where they sleep. Carol & Buddy |

SO normal.. get ready for more of it... if you want him to be crate trained.. you have to put up with the crying... when he cries.. take him out to pee... and then right back in.. unless you dont' care where he sleeps :) he'll keep crying until you let him out.. then he'll realize that this is where he is sleeping. .layla LOVES her crate.. she can't get in there fast enough at night! |

Sorry you're having such a tough time of it, but I hear it is normal behavior. I'll tell you what I'm doing and it's only been two nights, but it's been two peaceful nights. I put him in his crate after he's gone potty at my bedtime. I keep the crate on my night stand so he can see me. Inside the crate on the bottom lining it is a towel, on top of that is a hot water bottle half filled with warm water, a soft blanket on top of that and a Snuggle Puppy with the battery operated heartbeat. The first night he whimmpered about 5 seconds when I first closed the crate door and said "timer to go night night". I turned off the lights got into bed and turned my back to him and that was it until 2.5 hours later I heard a whimmper and nothing else. I peaked in to see if he wanted out to potty, but he was just readjusting himself. Second night same routine,and slept through the night without one compalint. I guess it's pretty cozy in there and he can see me next to him all the time. I pray this routine stays the norm. |
The other thing you can try is putting a piece of clothing that you have worn -- like an old tshirt or something -- in with Buster. Be aware that him may chew it up. The smell of you won't make if feel so alone -- this seemed to help with Mattie when we first brought him home. |
It's normal but you should decide now if you want him in your bed or not. If you don't want him in your bed you have to put up with the crying...ignore it except for potty breaks...until he accepts it. If you react to the crying, you are teaching him that is what it takes to get what he wants. When you say he is trying to leap on the bed, is he free to move around the room? I would suggest using a crate or an xpen if he is going to be on the floor. It helps with the training, it is safer for him and like Lauren said it does become a secure environment for them. |
