Barking Training Did you notice I had to change my signature from Most Darling furbaby to Most Barky furbaby?! She has to have my undivided attention at all times unless she is sleeping! I can't get any work done when I want to be on the computer, I have to type with one hand and hold a pull toy with the other for her to chew on. :) She just started doing this. She's 5+ months old and also chewing more than ever. Used to be just her toys, not it's my bed, the box under my bed, her bed, her blanket..... Has anyone had any success with clicker training? I don't know anything about it, but I don't know what to try. Yelling sure doesn't work. Nor does the can of rocks. Nor is "good girl" everytime she is quiet (she's never quiet). Wahhh!:( |
Mine hasn't reached the age of barking yet, but is there a way to just ignore it?? Would that work?? I am anxious to hear responses, because I know that we will be entering the barking age soon too, and I am dreading it!!! |
LOL, when I read the title of this thread I thought you wanted to train Tink to bark! NOT barking is another story...(as I try desperately to hear myself think through Ginger's barking at something that had the nerve to move in the street)...I've been an utter and complete failure in that regard! i spray layla with a water bottle... she HATES it.. and the look on her face when i spray her is priceless (because she thinks she is a princess). it's like HOW DARE YOU.. do you know who i am.. lol.. but she shuts up! |
Your describing Banjo to a T. Hes 5 months too. I am forever throwing the tug toy along the corridor so I can get a line typed. As for barking, I have tried all things, I'm hoping he grows out of it.:mad: |

I use the clicker training for barking! If you have never used a clicker before make sure you treat everytime you click then start just clicking in the quite moments if she barks a lot you may have to be really quick to mark the silent period with a click and treat... then I started to use the word quite with this it seemed to work with us. but try www.clickersoloutions.com for ideas. Thanks for the advice and the web site. I'll check it out. I filled up the spray bottle and is she ever mad at me. Don't know if that will work for us. |
Whenever my dogs barked at me I would give them a hand signal and say speak. then I would reward them for speaking. After they got the hang of that. I would make the same hand gesture and move it from left to right and say "no speak". Then I would reward them for the silence. It really works because I have been able to tell them "no Speak" when a visitor comes and they are just amazed that they quit barking. The hand gesture I use is " I use my index finger and thumb and open and close them repeatedly for speak. Then for "no speak" I make the above gesture once and move it sideways like a minus sign in the air. Does that make sense? For my Husky I use all of the fingers, kind of looks like the quack , quack motion one would make with their hand. It is worth a shot. Let me know if this helps. Sit and speak and of course no speak are the first tricks I have taught all of my dogs. |
I used the "pennies in a can trick"...every time Cooper would bark I shook the can(pop can with ten or so pennies in it) which startled him into stopping and said "no bark". Sure did not take very long for him to catch on either....two or three shakings I think. Now i can just say "no bark" and he quiets down right away.
