Am I doing this right??
 

I know I post daily about Mocha's progress or lack of progress on her training.. Anyway, I have her pooping on paper in my dining area... She has been going on the paper or right next to it.. However, I have her going pee on the wee-wee pad (sometimes) in the kitchen... That is when she's good.. When she's bad she pees anywhere but on the pad but she seems to always poop on the paper.. Is it bad I am training her to go #1 somewhere and then #2 somewhere else!! I think she is afraid of the wee pad for pooping cause she'll get to it, bark a while, and then run to the paper

My Comet is fully trained to go outdoors and he never poops and pees in the same place. I don't know why this is, but he seems to be able to pee anywhere outside, but he takes his time to find the perfect pooping spot.

I've heard on this eboard that alot of dogs that are trained on wee-wee pads seem to have a problem peeing everywhere indoors.

As long as your dog understands what you want him to do, and you feel comfortable with the way he responds, then it should be OK. If you would rather him do #1 and #2 in the same place then it's worth trying something else.

One possible solution may be to try these new dog litter boxes, that work just like cat litter boxes. Dogs can pee and then bury their poop. This will allow the dog to feel like he is not peeing and pooping in the same place. It's worth a try. ;)

Thank you for your sound advice.. I notcie when I take Mocha on the lesh she has no problem pooping or peeing... It takes a while but she seems to always go... I'll keep the litter box in mind!!

If you are going to do paper training you MUST be consistent. No, not just with timing but also "medium" (make a choice, is it going to be paper or wee-wee pad and then stick to it) and "placement" (exactly where in the house is your dog's bathroom going to be). Some people buy littler boxes or pans to put under the paper. I think that is a great idea because it 1) makes out the exact spot that potty is allowed and 2) prevents spillage which can lead to your dog inadvertently "marking" a place in your house.

Consider this, you put the Sunday newspaper down on the floor, or you accidently drop your water bill, or the kids homework falls out of his bag . . . you need to make it perfectly clear to your dog when and where it is OK and when it is not OK. It's the same sort of problem people have when they let thier dogs chew an old sock or slipper . . how is the dog supposed to know when it is "OK" to chew and when it is not? Suddenly, the dog has a pair of Coach shoes in his mouth and the owner is screaming! lol.

I've said this many times, but I'll say it again, one of the biggest pitfalls of paper training is that it can be all too easy to muddy the waters and confuse your dog. Decide what you want your "end behavior" to be, make sure there is NO WAY your dog could be confused and then stick with it, stick with it, stick with it.
