Bell Training Rosie goes to the door when she needs to go, but want to teach her to use the bell. It takes a while to put her harness, coat, and leash on. Should I ring the bell when she goes to the door or wait until after I put everything on her? Do I ring the bell or get her paw and have her ring the bell? I tried the peanut butter way that I read about, but she just licked the bell and didn't ring it. Any suggestions? |
hhmm.. Forest, one of my other dogs always jumps and hits the door with his feet so I just hung a bell from the door handle long enough for his feet to hit it where he normally jumps. Slowly I was able to bring the bell up higher and now he just reaches up and snags it so it rings. Ok, that wasn't much help. I would keep trying to use the peanut butter and as soon as she actually makes it ring take her out. |
Ive posted on this before-Im not a trainer, but I read about bell training here on YT, so I decided to train LillyBelle-she learned it quite easily. I just hung a bell from the door, used teeny tiny pieces of turkey-took her up to the bell and said go "ding-ding" and rang the bell with her paws, gave her turkey and praised her a huge amount, did that about 10x, waited, repeated the process a couple times over an afternoon, did that the next day-and after about 2-3 days when I would say "go ding-ding" she would go ring the bell-I would give her turkey, praise...after a couple days I would say "go ding-ding" she would ring it, I would praise, give turkey, then we would go out and I would say go potty and started the ding-ding, go out, go potty process. She was about 5mos old at the time. Thats how I did it-hope it helps. Reward...lots of praise. |

oops! sorry, now it's on there twice. |
how long does it take to bell train them cause I'm getting another female yorkie ??????????? |
Thanks AMD-that photo/videoclip thingy is a little complicated for me...its a cute videoclip though-if I dont come right away-LillyBelle-really-really rings her bell....It only took a few days to teach the ringing (ding-ding)-she was 5mos old-probably another week or two to associate going ding ding-means go out and potty-after she learned that - she was fairly consistant but still having accidents, --she was not 100% potty trained until a year of age-which seems to be pretty consistant with alot of yorkies that I have read about here. I do realize now that she needs to go out every 2-3 hours, in the begining I thought it should be 4hrs or so-if I would have realized her schedule I might have been successful sooner. |
