Teaching to sit.... I started training lottie to sit a few weeks after i got her. She managed it fine or so i thought......she's been a bit bad of late when it comes to doing what shes told, ive been doing the "sit" command with her and giving her a treat when she does it correctly, like i did in the begining. In the begining I did wonder if she was actually sitting to my command or had got it in her head that if she plonks her bum on the ground a treat is on its way. Well the other day im practicing it with her, and even before i say sit, shes plonking her bum on the floor, she knows i have a treat in my hand so just sits, but isnt so good at doing it when i dont have a treat. |
A couple of pointers for perfecting "sit" - First, if you think she knows the command, don't give her a treat for sitting when you haven't given the command. Only reward those done on command. To reduce dependence on treats in your hand, try this. Set the treats on the counter. While standing right beside the counter, say "sit", and reward. Repeat several times. Then, take one step away from the counter and repeat. Gradually move away - a step at the time - from the counter and the treats so that she learns that you will still give her that treat even though you may have to go get it first. Good luck! |
will def give that a go thank you! |
Sit Bogey learned to sit with his treat also. But we started to use sit other than with a treat. He would have to sit when we opened the door & before he could go outside ( I didn't want him to run outside everytime the door was opened) he would have to sit. He knows even if the back door opens we have to tell him he can go outside or we tell him stay & he sits. We also made him sit before other events. He now sits when you tell him to no matter what's coming next. |
