Eating cat poop

This is the most annoying thing I have ever experienced. I can handle the constant accidents in the house despite taking her outside for 30 minutes and having her pee there and come back inside and do it in the house right in front of us.

But eating the cat poop is just gross.....it makes her breath smell nasty, so I don't want to snuggle with her. I'm afraid its going to make her sick. We even put the cat box up high and she somehow climbed into it and knocked the whole entire thing down. Now she is hiding cat poop under the furniture or in her cage.

Help....I'm really upset and at my whits end with this.

Yummy, cat poop! They all seem to love it.

What if you put a baby gate between your pup and the litter tray? Or, could you get one of those electronic self-cleaning litter trays?

abbie's mom 02-03-2007 05:31 AM

How old is your pup? House training sometimes takes awhile, and LOTS of consistency and PATIENCE! Please, don't give up on her over this.

Now, as far as the cat poo eating - I can totally empathize with the frustration! We don't even have cats, but the ferrell cats in the area seem to think my backyard is a litter box. I can't even let Abigail out, because if there is any within her reach, she finds it and scarfs it down. EEEWWWWWWWWWW!!! Last time, I went in after it, scooping it out of her mouth. I always have to be ready to bathe her and - yes - I wash her mouth out with dog shampoo. It IS disgusting, and it CAN make them ill. Cat poo can be toxic to small dogs. And, no one seems to know why some of our furbabies love it, so. I agree that the self-cleaning litter box should help a great deal - I think that's a grand idea for anyone with dogs who take a liking to cat poo. It should take a lot of daily stress from your life, and protect the pooch.

Cat poop is at the top of Roxy's food pyramid. Bird poop is next in line. I had to put the litter box up so now she follows the cats around with her nose in their butts all the time. If they are laying down, she tries becomes a mobile butt cleaner. She digs it up outside (a little tougher now that the ground is frozen) and there's nothing I can do to stop her. We have to steer clear of the pond on our walks because of all the goose poop there - another delicacy. I understand it has something to do with the fact that they like cat food so much and if recycled is the only way to get it, well then, recycled it is. Good luck and I hope your baby outgrows it. I am still waiting for Roxy to.:p

peanut 02-03-2007 07:23 AM

If mine have a chance they will eat it too...I don't know why it is really gross but they love it....I put the boxes where they can't get them, but if they get a chance its like the biggest treat of all for them....  :p

:yelrotflm .... Yes! When Abigail barks at the cats outside, we imagine she's saying something like: "Gi'me that poo! Leave some over there!" LOL And, we've speculated that if she were out with them, she'd be following them around WAITING for the dropped treasure. *sigh*

PANAMA69 02-05-2007 11:32 PM

YOU ARE ALL TO FUNNY:lol2: PHEOBE KNOWS THAT SHE IS NOT ALLOWED NEAR THE CAT LITTER, I WILL KEEP IT CLEAN AT ALL TIMES, AND MY EAGLE EYES ON HER SOME TIME EVEN THE CAT VOMIT SHE LICK:cat0: :tongue4: GROOSSS, WHEN SHE IS ALONE I USE A BABY GATE. SO FAR SO GOOD

Last week my son carried LillyBelle to me and said--"what does she have all over her face, nose and mouth?" I looked and said SHE'S BEEN IN THE KITTY BOX!! HER FACE WAS COVERED IN LITTLE BLUE/WHITE PEBBLES! Guess she ate the scented litter, along with the poopoo. She threw up all day and during the night, I had to give her sugar water to keep her from getting hypoglycemic-she just felt terrrible. The next day she could keep down some broth and finally after two days-real food. I had to treat her like a sick child. I always keep the kitty box scooped up, but I must have missed a "scooping, I got a short 3in box and put the kitty box on top of that in the laundry room, so she cant reach it now.

Bebe like rabbit poop!! but maybe it is not rabbit poop and there is a cat out there pooping and hes eating that?? Will it hurt them? I dont think it has any affect on him I just try not to let him eat it...........ewwwwwwwwwwww

rachelsyorkie 02-10-2007 12:27 AM

From my experience No they will not stop, if they can find poop they will eat it, be happy she doesnt eat her own. We no longer have a cat because of this.:( And as far as health concerns most farm animals, birds & ferrel cats carry coccidiosis & other diseases it will be very important to keep your dog wormed , I use albon to control the coccidiosis. It is transferred thru the poo this article helped me coccidiosis but use this for treatment/prevention if you choose to Albon 5% You can also just periodically take a stool sample to your vet to be tested for around $10 to make sure there are no parasites, no office visited needed so no $30 office fee :). They all like the cat poo, I use to bring the litter box in the living room w/poo & then if they tried to get close scold them, thought it would help. I actually cut a little cat door so only the cat could get in, since before I would have to keep the door open for the cat-but a little dog can fit thru the cat door so...we no longer have a cat. I use to come home with cat poo & litter drug every where:mad: I would be so pissed. Then the neighbors cats crapping all in the mulch, we replaced all the mulch w/pea gravel which they will still crap in but I spray it w/some bleach water to keep them away. So even after rehoming our poor cat, then more work & money because of the neighbors cats, then a chainlink fence to help keep them away from bunny & deer droppings $cha ching$cha ching$. All the research & vet visits $ trying to figure out a way to keep them healthy w/o going broke. So I ask ya, do I love my yorkie, well do I ...punk-lol Darn this Cursed Yorkie Love :p Wish I had better news for ya. sounds like the auto litter box is a good idea, a gate maybe but some yorkies are climbers & then maybe a tie out in a designated area when she's outside to keep her away from the poo poo hot spots til you can figure something else out. Boy I'm windy tonight-sorry.

Thanks

Thanks Rachel your info was very helpful and yes I too love my Yorkie and will go to all expense to keep him healthy and safe. He is on a heart worm once a month-is this different from the heartworm meds?

Tink's Mom 02-10-2007 10:37 AM

My toy poodle used to eat our cat's litter until I placed the litter pan in the bathtub where he couldn't get in. It was too slippery for him to jump over the tub - and he hated baths so he just wouldn't go there. You could try that.

You will have to ask your vet what worms are covered by that medication, maybe its on the packaging. I know tape worm usually isnt & coccidiosis which is another parasite isnt. Usually round & hook the 2 most common are, sometimes whipworms. Best to every couple months get a stool test done or at least if the poo looks odd at all. I'm glad it was helpful-I thought you might say jeez Rachel Hush:D If I can ever help I'm here.

rachelsyorkie 02-10-2007 11:54 PM

OMG I have the same problem, my neighbor has like 10 cats who roam the neighborhood and my yard is their damn toilet. I almost lost my Tiffany last year because of eating the poop.
Now I have a cat whom I never let out, my dogs NEVER try and eat her poop, they dont have access to it in the laundry room but occasionaly one of them sneek in there when Im doing wash but never go near her litter box.
I had a thought and wonder if it is true. My cat is on a high quality diet (Innova) and its not loaded with junk like the crappy foods out there. I think my cat's body is using all the nutrients in the food where my neighbors cats, I can tell you for sure she isnt giving those cats a high quality food and the food is loaded with junk which her cat's bodys are not using all the ingredients in the food and its coming out in their poop (I hope im making sense). Therefor my dogs are smelling the junk in their poop and trying to eat it and my cat's poop has no leftover junk in her poop and they have no intrest in hers

Grayson's mom 02-11-2007 11:09 AM

We turned our little box backwards, Get a baby gate that will work as your cat can jump over that but your dog can't.

I found this on the net may be helpful to you!

Eating Feces from Cat Litter Boxes

People tend to be horrified to find their dog is eating feces from the cat litter box. One of the first questions they ask is whether this means the dog has a nutritional deficiency. Since the behavior is common even in the most well nourished dogs, the fact that they like the taste is a more likely reason. It's not a good idea to allow it to happen, and training is not a reliable option for a behavior that provides the dog with a "tasty treat"-tasty to the dog, that is.

What to Do

It is normal for dogs to eat cat feces wherever they can find it. If the dog had access to the litter box prior to this and never touched it, that might mean a change in behavior significant to a change in medical status. It could also mean, though, that the dog just didn't discover this doggie delicacy until recently.

Think about whether some change in the household may have made the cat litter box easier to get to--that could be your answer. For example, a cat might have previously intimidated the dog so much that the dog wasn't willing to brave the box. That cat may be less firm with the dog now, or perhaps the dog got through and got a taste, and now is harder for the cat to deter.

If you suspect a medical problem, and especially if the dog is showing any symptoms, of course see your veterinarian. All manner of medical problems can cause changes in eating behavior.

Whether there is a medical problem or not, you'll now need to place the litter box where it is physically impossible for the dog to get to it, but easy for the cat(s). For one thing, cats will often abandon using a litter box when a dog starts intruding. Most people will find this at least as serious a problem as a dog eating cat feces.

People arrange the litter box in various ways, depending on the relative sizes of their dogs and cats, as well as the agility of the cats. Sometimes placing the litter box higher than the dog can jump works well, if the cat is completely comfortable making the jump.

If the dog is larger than the cat, you can put the litter box behind an opening that the cat can fit through but the dog cannot. One idea is a baby gate set slightly above the floor so that a cat can scoot under it (or jump over). Of course it has to be high enough that the dog can't jump it. Sometimes that means stacking two baby gates, one above the other.

It's also possible to use a chain on a doorframe or doorknob, modified to the right length so the cat can slip through the opening but the dog cannot. Another variation is to use wire to make a latch that holds the door partially open. Whatever you devise, remember to make it feasible to take on and off to go in and out of the room.

Another arrangement is to put a box over the litter box with an opening at one end, and then put a bigger box over that one with an opening in the other end. The cat can go in one opening, through the "tunnel" between boxes to the other opening, and into the box. This method may not work with a small, audacious dog who will go through the maze, too! Remember that cats see well in the dark, so the darkness inside this contraption is not a problem.

Conclusion

Having a dog invade the litter box is not a cat's idea of reasonable privacy, and eating cat feces is not particularly good for the dog. The behavior is innately rewarding since the dog likes the taste, so you're unlikely to solve it with attempts at training. The safest and best solution is to simply rearrange the situation so the dog finds it physically impossible to get to the cat litter box.

Poop eating

My baby loved to get in the litter box. I think he thought he was digging for buried treasure. Our lab does it too. My husband says "he's eating canned food" - gross - we put For-Bid on the cats' food. This is the only anti-coprophagic that I have found that you can give to cats. THey can't taste it and it passes through their system and makes their poop "unpalatable". Sprinkle it on the food for a few days and after two or three "snacks" the dogs should quit eating it. If they start up again just repear the process. It's worked great for us.

thank goodness for outdoor cats
