Constantly changing weewee pads Missy is 12.5 weeks old and only having her for 3 weeks we are still working on training her. She doesn't go out, but instead we have a weewee pad in her cage. When she is confined to her cage while we are at work, she potties on her weewee pad as she should. However, when I come home, I change the weewee pad immediately and over the course of the evening as well as the weekend when we are home all day, I change the weewee pads everytime she goes on them. So what happens then is when she is left out of the cage and free to walk around while we are at home, she goes in a corner of her room and not on the weewee pad. Someone said to leave the soiled weewee pad so that she knows that she should march into her cage and potty in there. I am spending a fortune on weewee pads as sometimes I am replacing them up to 4 times a day, but I can't bear for her to be around her own poop and I don't want to see it either. Is there any harm in leaving the soiled weewee pad say for an entire day? Any comments are appreciated. |
welcome to Yorkies!!!!!!!!!! LOL My Lillie is 11 months old and she will potty on her wee wee pad that is on her expen, but when she is free to roam, she is still having accidents. She goes to her wee wee pad about 85% of the time. All I can say is, just keep reinforcing her to use the pad and find a "special" treat that is JUST for when she potty's on her pad, and when she does potty where she is suppose to, make sure you and her have a party! tell her how wonderful she is! She will get it down, it will just take some hard work and patients! |
It's not harmful or bad to leave the soiled pad down for the day unless it really gets soaked, but that probably won't happen with one puppy. When she poops on the pad take some tissue, pick it up and flush it away...then you can leave the pad down longer. |

Can I ask what you give your Yorkie as a special treat and what did you give her when she was about 3 months old? I am so afraid of giving Missy junk that I just don't know what to get? |
This is going to sound gross, but a wee pad is like a sanitary pad. It does not need to be changed every time she goes pee! I change Gracie's wee pad about once a day, unless she has diarrhea, then all rules are out the window! If she has a normal poo, I just pick that up with a tissue and toss it, leaving the wee pad. |
I change mine once a day also. I've just switched to the washable pee pads and they work better than the disposable ones as far as durability and absorbancy. Just a thought:) |
Oh and Hoku's 'potty treat' is Honey Nut Cheerios! She will use the pad and then walk to the other side of the kitchen and sit on the floor looking up at the jar of cheerios till I give her one:) If I forget she definitely lets me know! |

I find it amusing that this thread was started by ladydinj asking if it's ok to leave a soiled wee-wee pad down during the day, and it ended up with giving dogs cheerios. :questione Anyway, make sure you keep the pad in one place at all times. If the poo is firm, then pick it up with tissue and flush. You should be able to use the pad again. As long as she pottys anywhere else other than her pad when she is out, then don't let her out unless you are holding her on the sofa or playing with her on bare floor. Neve let her go off by herself. |
I have a 10 week old puppy and she pottys every 10 minutes unless she is sleeping! Well it seems like every 10 minutes. But I can get by with her pottying 3 times or so on the pad before I change it. As far as poop I pick it up with tissue and flush it as well. I work at a hospital and our supply department sells Chux...which is the same as a wee wee pad for dogs but they are actually more absorbant. They come in large and small(size of standard wee wee pads) I get 10 pads for .98. If you know someone that works at your local hospital I would ask them if they have a supply department they may be able to get u that same deal on them. At the price I pay I can stand to change them twice a day but if I were paying regular price I would say leave it down :) |
