killer yorkie My 2 yr old, :aimeeyork 6 lb. Bayley has a strong killer instinct. First it was a mouse in the house, then a bird in the breezeway. Recently, he caught and killed 2 baby rabbits in the yard. He gets very aggressive if you try to stop him. He gets nasty over greenies sometimes too. My other yorkie is totally different. He wouldn't hurt a fly. Anyone else have problems with their yorkie killing other animals?? 2 dogs is enough for me right now but if I ever got another pup, I think he'd try to kill it. Is there anyway to curb this behavior? |
That's a very good question Sammy. I sometimes wonder how much of the Yorkie gene is still there where they were used for rat killing in the mines. Maggie gets on the trail of moles in the yard. She can dig through a mole tunnel faster than the mole can dig. We don't let her catch one though. It would be a toss up on who would win. |
Duncan would kill if he could we just don't let him. It's instinct we breed it into terriers and it will take a long time to breed it out of them again IMO. |
Pookie was the puppy from hell When my two year old Pookie was just an adorable ten week old puppy, he began to show some frightening antisocial behaviors. He was well behaved during the day. But every night he would growl like a wild animal, lunge towards me, and try to bite. He also shook his toys violently as though he were trying to kill them. My husband and I nicknamed him "Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde" and "The Yorkshire Terrorist." Pookie eventually outgrew this terrible behavior, and now he's a sweet baby who loves to cuddle. But we still have to be careful. We can't give him any rawhide or real bones because they make him a little crazy. Whenever I see one of these spells coming on, I just cuddle him firmly in my arms for a few minutes, and this calms him down. My one year old Boo Boo is as gentle as a lamb. My neighbor told me female dogs usually have sweeter temperments than male dogs. Does anyone else on YorkieTalk think female dogs are generally mellower than male dogs? Incidentally Sammy, when we got little Boo Boo last summer we were concerned about how Pookie would react and whether he would try to attack her. We watched Pookie closely for a few days, but he never acted aggressively towards her. In fact, Boo Boo seems to be the dominant dog. My vet said it's a good idea to mix the sexes if you're planning to get another dog. A male and a female are less likely to fight than two males or two females. |
Stewie gets crazy when he is bored. He shakes his toys, but I think its cute. I think its natural to chase rodents -- esp. for Yorkies. I hope they don't try to breed their terrier characteristics out of them. I like how inquisitive he is and willing to learn. |
Maggie Anne...my little princess...is DEADLY when it comes to chipmunks. She has caught two in each of the past two summers. Both times got them on the run across our back yard, one good snap of the neck and then she brought them over to me. ("Look, Ma. I brung you some dinner!") Now that I have Molly, I fear for the wildlife of Berea! |
I had a doxie that was a mass murderer. Killed birds, chipmunks, mouse, rabbits, anything he could catch. Sometimes, he would be in the backyard for days stalking one of his victims. It is very instinctive. I've been told that dogs usually will not hurt a puppy because they know it is their own kind. But I think, if you ever get another puppy, I wouldn't trust him along with it. |

Thanks everyone. My mother has a female and she can be as aggressive as Bayley. Most of the time he's sweet as can be. My husband witnessed the bunny incident and said he'd never have believed the behavior if he hadn't seen it for himself. I live in the country down a deadend road so he's not on a leash when he's out. They don't leave our property, I think he's just protecting his territory. He loves his brother, Sammy & my mom's yorkie, Pepper. But he's not wild about other dogs. |
hey actually did you know that yorkies were orignally bred to be hunting dogs? that's probably all thats going on. |
yes. i do know that. it's just gruesome to think that my little baby is a killer dog!! my other yt tries to play with any animal he finds. |
