Annoying habit... I admit, I've spoiled my dog... I was always so proud that he was so independent and all, not one of 'velcro dogs'. Well, I realized he, in fact, is. Pepper will sit in front of me and whine for attention. When I go to the bathroom, when I sit at the computer, or try to watch TV. He'd sleep and when I leave the room, he wakes up and follows. Especially tries to wedge himself between hubby and I when we sit down and watch TV - like he's jealous? Those are not the worst, in the morning when Pepper realizes we're waking up he'll start jumping and whining, he doesn't quit, I've tried to let him whine hoping he'd stop but he doesn't. He just wants me to get up and play with him  . How do I train him to stop??? |
I don't have an answer sorry, but I would love to know the answer to your question as well. I have a 10 week old, but I really want to break the habit of this before it gets out of hand. Please don't say that it's "in" the breed, because I think every dog has the chance to be NOT WHINEY if taught correctly, I just want to know the correct way. Great question!!! |
I had the exact problem with Buddy when he was younger. What I did at that time was to keep a chew bone in the night stand drawer and when he saw me waking up and started playing I reached in the drawer and pulled out his chew bone. He layed down and chewed and I went back to sleep! Today we both sleep until I GET UP! Carol & Buddy |
I am not the OP, but my problem isn't in the morning, it's mostly at night when I would like him to just veg out and I am tired from a long day or something. Fortunately with Scruffy in his crate he isn't doing much whining in there. My whining episodes are basically at night and occasionally through the day when I can't just play........and he is just wanting attention. |
have you tried things like a Kong or the Everlasting treat?? when layla wants attention and i'm just too busy.. i fill up her kong.. keeps her busy for quite a while.. or what about a bully stick? layla can't have them (she gets a tad too possesive) hwoever, if she could i know it would keep her busy for hours.. just make sure you can watch him so he done'st choke. Have you thought of giving him "crate time". i remember reading somehwere that dogs need down time too... an hour or so in their crate with a toy or something to chew to just settle down. Good luck |
I didn't crate train him, when he was tiny, I tried but after he went in his crate and went back to sleep in it  ,I stopped (he was just one of those dogs that 'didn't mind'...). He has his toys in the basket in the kitchen (where he sleeps at night), along with flossies, bully sticks and rawhide bones. He KNOWS we don't like him jumping around the bed and whining in the morning, hubby just looks at him and he backs up right to the kitchen where he sits down and whines. Why doesn't he listen to me :( . When he's been told to go to his place (when we're busy cooking ie), he tries to run to me and hide between my legs or behind me, like the rules don't apply with Mommy!! I think I need to establish myself more of a leader? |
My boys do the SAME thing! They need SOOO much attention!! Sometimes, actually most of the time, I feel like when Im home Im not allowed to do anything else but give them 100% of my attention! My mom used to live up the street and I used to bring them to her house and drop them off for a couple hours so I could clean my house or go food shopping... but she moved far away and I cant do that anymore and Im now realizing how hard it is to get anything done! Can't even go to the bathroom without them, if they are not in the bathroom they whine & bark outside the door and scratch the door! If they are in the bathroom they jump up on my lap!!! Its neverending! If my boyfriend hugs me they bark and jump up really high like they are jealous that he is hugging me! They have MAJOR seperation anxiety and I just got another letter from my condo association that people are complaining bc they bark all day when i'm at work!!! I went to the store the other day and left my boyfriend in the house with him (they LOVE him) and I was gone 4 minutes! he said they barked and paced the house the ENTIRE time! Then when I get back they don't want me, they lay on HIS lap ... its like they need me in the room, but have no use for me as long as Im there!!! I have to say, I dont know what would be harder, these fur babies, OR skin babies! haha I have no kids of my own but I do double think ever having them bc of my fur babies! haha |
I couldn't have written it better myself. I go through the same EXACT thing every day. Its as if some of them are twins! |
im in the same boat... im so tired after a fulls day or work and i go home and have lexi wanting to play for 5 hours... im exhaused.. i feel so so bad for her. it seems nothing get her tired anymore.. i guess cause she sleeps all day long while im at work and when i get home, its play time... she doesnt even want her bully sticks , she just want me me me...i love her to pieces and wouldnt trade her for the world, i just wish there was an everlasting treat to keep her busy for an hour or so.... its rough being a single mom.. |
How about a walk? My hubby walks Mia for at least a mile - every day. If he didn't - I think she'd be doing it to him. Plus we do have to set aside time to play with her. It's just like having a child. If you can't walk them, maybe you could pay someone you know to do it. There's an elderly lady that walks her dog the same time hubby does and she walks her neighbors Yorkie for at the same time. Just an idea...:) |
i walk lexi every single morning and when i get home.... its cold out there brrrr, she doesnt even want to walk.. she turns around. i feel so bad that she is so lonely... mom stops by during the day most of the time, thats a little help and she lets her out to potty.. |

I know... I've been seriously thinking about getting another Yorkie. It's just hubby and I now, and even though we spend alot of time with Mia, I think she'd be really happy to have a brother or sister. I love her soo much and I kinda get worried that she might think we're pushing her aside by getting one but then there are so many others out there that do have 2. Then I can't decide if I want another female or a male. Originally I wanted a male, but when I saw Mia - that was it - I had to have her. I guess when the time is right and I see the right one - I'll know  I do want one that is fairly close (I don't want a long drive) and has the darker coloring like Mia and same size as Mia (6 lbs). Do you think I'm asking too much? :D Have a great day Gina!! |

I come home and give them a good 1/2 hour play time, I let them outside on the patio for awhile to play also.. in the summer its easier cuz I take them walking all the time and they knock out by 8pm for the night, but winter is hard! |
I meant good 1/2 hour play time with me before I make dinner! then we play all night after I make, eat and clean up from dinner! :) |
