Is it to early to bell train... My puppy is 11wks and I am using the crate at night and when I am in class during the day..He is pretty consistent with pooping outside..But even when he pees outside he still pees again in the house...I was wondering if the bell can be incorporated in our training being that the most of the day he is out of the crate. He goes to the stairs and sniffs when its poop time but not to many obvious signals when its time to pee. |
It's not too early to get in the habit, but don't expect him to signal you this early that he needs to go. He only knows 30 seconds before anyway. Once he gets a warning himself, then he will know how to tell you! |
Seems young, Lillybelle was 5mos when she learned to ring the bell-maybe could do it sooner, but she was that age when I read about that here on YT and thought I would teach her. She's a year now and ALWAYS rings her bell to go out- you can look in the general discussion area - I put a video clip there a week or so ago of her ringing her bell to go out. |
At this point, what I would do is simply suspend the bell from the door knob of the door that you take your puppy through to go outside. That way, he will begin associating the sound of the bell ringing with the door opening. You'll have to be on your toes. If puppy accidentally rings the bell, RUN to open it. He'll eventually learn "Hey, this works like magic. I ring this bell and Mom comes running to let me out! Cool." |
I use poochie bells...when I first started training Bella i put a LITTLE peanut butter on them to get her to ring them. When she did I would say "outside" and open the door. She soon got the hang of it and would ring them and realized the door would open when she did. She is now 7mo and completely potty trained with them...and has been for some time. We have a set at my parents house too. |
