Hi I'm new I have a question about collars and leashes I have an almost 10 week old Yorkie, and he can't stand his collar, should I continue to leave it on him, he even gets so distracted by it that he won't go the bathroom when we are outside because it bugs him so much!!? Also I am trying to get him to go with the leash too, but he refuses and sits down. Is this something I should just KEEP DOING or should I give him a break from these two things? Thanks so much! Heidi |
Do NOT use a collar on your yorkie to attach a leash to - especially to a 10 week old puppy. Yorkies have very small and fragile tracheas... a few tugs on the leash can cause permanent damage down the road for your little one, including a collapsing trachea. Rather than a collar, try a step-in harness. Some people use collars on their yorkies strictly to keep their tags on them, but many (including myself) don't even do that. Welcome to YT and good luck with your new baby! Edited to add: 10 weeks is pretty young to be venturing outside on a leash really. Are you just potty training, or are you trying to walk him? At 10 weeks he isn't fully vaccinated yet and it's not a great idea to have him outside too much - there are many germs/diseases he can pick up outside. Have you thought of using pee pads to train until he's a little bigger/older? |
I dont use a collar to many dogs have chocked on them. You really dont want to use a collar for walking. The collar puts too much stress on the trachea and can result in the yorkie getting collapsed trachea. You want to use a harness. Put the leash on at home first and let them drag it around. Mine never wuld let me walk them inside the house at first but once I got them outside they walked |
Hi Heidi, and welcome to YT :) Not many people use collars, a few of our members have had accidents due to their babies wearing collars. Most of us use harnasses, it's definatly a lot safer. Hope you enjoy your stay with us, if you have any questions, feel free to ask, there are always people willing to help. |
See I have already screwed up............it's not a collar, it's a harness, we just call it a collar, the hook is on his back. He hates the thing though and scratches.........does everyone keep this on their Yorkie all day or just when they go for walks? I figure he will NEVER get used to it if I don't keep it on him. What about the leash?? |
I just put mine on when we go on walks. Maybe you should try a vest harness. My dogs like those the best |

OOH, well that's different then! Glad you're using a harness  Try letting him wear it around the house - but start with short intervals at first and let him build up to wearing it for longer periods. Eventually as he starts going outside more, he will associate the harness with going outside and I gaurantee he won't put up a fuss. Really at 10 weeks, I wouldn't worry about it too too much. Work at it slowly, with just the harness - once he gets used to that, attach the leash and let him get used to that in the home as well. |

No you didnt screw up. You are here to learn, and i'm glad you made it here! Maybe you could try the harness vests? My girls seem to prefer wearing those. He will get used to the leash, it's all very new to him ;) |
lexi just hated the harness in the beginning, but then got used to it. i only put it on her when we walk. |
A vest harness might be the ticket. They fit with velcro closures, and can be made comfortably snug. My understanding is that, though things should not be too tight, our furkids don't like loose fitting clothing, etc. There are several members who make / sell them here ;). Welcome to YT! |
Sorry to hijacked this thread but I will be using a harness from now on, I had my puppy on collar and attached the leash to it, he was to excited and pull me all the time and sometimes he coughed, so now I will get him a harness. I don't want him with CT. Thank you for all your suggestions. |
It takes time for them to get used to a collar. I keep one on Venus, cause her tags are on it. Seems it took her about a week to get used to it, and quit biting her tags! But I use a harness for walking, never a collar. The harness stays attached to her leash when not in use. |
I also have a collar for Reesie, but we waited until she was a year old. We bought a cat collar because if it gets caught on something it breaks free so they can't choke. I really wanted something that showed ID in case she got lost. |
Thats good to know. I am also new to all this. We just got a 11 week pup and i did get him a regular colar and it is for his tags only. I have been letting him walk around with it so he can get use to it. I do want to take hum out doors but he's never been out there be4 and he's a little weary... lol Can i put his colar and the harnest? Thanks Brooklyns Mami |
I don't use a collar either. They can really huft the dog. A harness is much better |
