Scout won't stop pooping in the house!
 

Hi guys,
I could really use all the help i can get. I've had my baby Scout since the beginning of Novemeber, and he just turned 5months the other day. We've been working on house training, but I'm having such a hard time with it . He does go peepee outside most of the time, but he will not stop pooping in the house. I don't know what to do. I just started living with my dad and step mom as I'm going to school, and my father is getting fed up with Scout pooping in the house. I need some help before my dad restricts my baby to cage all the time.

So sorry to say, that it could take a while before he stops pooping in the house. He is 'still a baby' - puppy and he is learning.

I would suggest - strong POSITIVE PRAISE and TREATS for GOOD POTTY behavior. Re-enforce Good Potty - Never punish :p

Elisha is right on both counts: it may well take quite a bit longer because he is still so young and you need to very positively reward good behavior while ignoring the bad.

If you punish a dog for pooping in the house, he learns that it isn't safe to poop around you. He then feels the need -even more- to hide from you to go. He will be less likely to poop when you are there (like when you take him outside).

Although this will sound gross, take some of his poop outside and leave it there. When you take him outside, lead him to the poop and let him smell it. Dogs often stimulate themselves to defecate by smelling old feces. Be sure you have taken some really good treats out with you when you take him out. Then, just wait. You may have to wait and wait and wait. When he does finally poop outside, throw a party - loads of treats and tons of excited praise in your most excited, little-girl voice.

Be sure you are using an enzyme cleaner from the pet store to clean up his poo. Regular cleaners won't destroy the smell. If the smell is there, it will make it a nice familiar place to poop which is not what you want.

I expect another problem is that your folks don't take him out often enough (or reward him appropriately) when you aren't there...

maybe you aren't staying outside long enough. that was my problem. Troy would pee then go to the door to go back in. i thought she was done. then when would get inside she would go poop. so now when she trys to go in i say "Go Potty" and she will go back out in the yard and poop.

Im having the SAME problem. My boys will pee outside 90% of the time now, but one of them still comes in and poops in the house! Its like he holds it until he has gone out to pee, then comes in and poops! They are OVER a year old now!! I don't know what to do! Ive started giving them a treat EVERY time they go outside! They come in and expect a treat now everytime, even if they go out and do nothing! This is working for peeing, but the pooping is still happening! AARRGG
