Soooo many questions... Hello All. My name's Denisse and I just purchased a 9 month old Yorkie pup on Friday. HE'S GREAT! However, I've never owned a dog before and have a TON of questions. 1. Tito's not potty trained (shouldn't he be at this age???). We're working on it and he's getting better at peeing outside (some accidents still) but he still won't poo out there. I purchased those little doggy pee pads....won't use them. I purchased a crate and put him in there all the time unless we're walking, he's eating or I'm playing with him. Yesterday I left him in there for about an hour and a half and he soiled it. The crate says it's for small dogs under 25 lbs. My friend suggested that the crate might be too big for him for potty training; I put something in the crate so that it just allows him to stand up, turn around, etc. I left him in there for awhile and he was ok...no mess. he slept in it, no problems. How can i get him to poo outside!?!? 2. I work a full time job. I'm gone from 8am-6pm approximately. This morning I walked him at 6am for abut 20 minutes (he peed twice), brought him in, fed him, put him back in the crate while i got ready for work, at about 7am I took him back outside for about 10 minutes (no pee/poo). Then i put him in the bathroom with newspaper on the floor while I'm at work (I made sure to remove anything that could be harmful to him in there but I did leave him his water dish and some chew toys). Am I doing anything incorrectly? Should I be keeping him in his crate all day while I'm at work? It seems a bit long, especially since he's not potty trained yet. I am going to try using my lunch breaks to go home and walk him but I work at a busy firm and that's not always possible. How many times a day does a 9 month old dog need to be walked? I'm only going to feed him in the morning after our walk and in the afternoon when I get home. Is this enough? AAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! I'm freaking out because I feel like I don't know what I'm doing and I want to be the best mom possible to Tito. I'm completely enamored by this little guy already...I felt like crying this morning when I had to leave him at home (it's so weird..I've never felt this way about anything before). I have more questions but I have to get back to work right now. Thanks in advance to all that reply with comments/suggestions. |
It must be very difficult for you and your yorkie with you working full time. Have you any family that could help? I work and so does my hubby but we seem to work opposite shifts so Pip is never left alone for too long. At two years old he is like a clockwork yorkie! I take him out in the morning and he always does two poos, funny I never count his wees but he does wee too. He is then taken out by myself or Bob during the day and last thing at night before bed. If I go out the first thing I do on returning home is take pip out for a wee. When I am out he is left in a crate that is 3 feet by two and there is enough room for his bed water and food bowls and newspaper on the base just incase he needs to go but this has never happened as yet. I hope you can get into a routine. I am sure you will get lots of good advice from people on this forum I know that I have. :) |
Hi! Where in Chicago are you? Where did you get him? I think that has to do with whether or not he "should" be potty trained. Mine is 6mos and is approx. 89% potty trained. I've had him since 12 or 13 weeks. I've never crate trained so I have no advice to give about that. Welcome to Yorkie Talk! |
Ok I am a stalker and saw the Yorkie Talk profile you made. 60622 :) Wicker Park? |
Trish & Kristy: Thanks for replying...even just knowing that other people can somewhat relate/understand is comforting for some reason. Trish: Unfortunately I don't really have anyone that can help me out. My roommate is there some of the time but let's just say I don't really trust that she'll be able to provide the consistency that's necessary in order for the training to work properly (she's a whole other story.... ). Besides, she's only my roommate for another month. I was thinking that 3x a day would be plenty as well but I'm nervous about leaving him in the crate since he's not pooping outside yet. I'm considering getting a dog walker but they're pretty pricy :( Kristy: Close to Wicker Park...Ukranian Village. I got Tito from a family that got him from a breeder or so I was told. Glad to see you're a Sox fan...we love the Sox too ;) |
I work all day too Chewie is 7 months old and I work all day. I come home from work everyday at lunch to let him out. This is when I usually walk him, a 20 minute walk at lunch, he pee's 100's of times which seems to help him hold it. I crate trained him in the beginning but because he holds it now I just leave him in our laundry room. I felt guilty leaving him all day long when I was at work so we just got our second puppy - Pete. They play all day long and it's much more fun for Chewie. I don't feel like they can hold it for a full work day, especially if you consider your commute time on top of 9 hours so if you can't come home I think you are doing the right thing with giving him a place to go - on the paper. Don't stress about the house training - he will be trained if you are consistent and continue to work on it. |
