awful housetraining issues

We have had our yorkie since sept. I think he was 8 wks then. We have tried everything to potty train him. He has only pooped once outside and it was when my dad came over to let him out for us. We had our carpet cleaned in october and it looks awful! We have tried confining him and giving him a lil more space at a time and he will go a few days fine and then pee all over. Well I am pregnant and due in August. My husband said that if we cant get it worked out by then we have to give him away! I would be so sad and the place we got him from wasnt very nice but its kinda family and they gave us the dog free so he thinks thats where we should take him! I definately dont want him to go back there. He is so good about everything else and does great with lil kids. I just need to get this one thing fixed!!! Help me please!

We have tried

letting him outside every hour or two......we let him in and even when he just peed outside he pees again on the carpet!

pee pad in the bathroom...even the grass scented ones.....he mostly pees around them not on them

A frame he has to step over to get to the pee pad so he doesnt think he is on it when he isnt

treats and lots of praise when he does good, saying bad and such when he does bad.

crate at night with a pad and a bed.....he pees on the bed and lays on the pad!

HELP PLEASE!!!!!

Poor thing. You sound exasperated. Don't panic. Whether you do decide to keep him or not, I guarantee you can have him potty trained before August with a little patience and a lot of praise. If my math is right, your pup is still only about 20 weeks. That's still young. August is 7 1/2 months away. YTers should have a lot of good advice for you. Here's my .02:

* Potty training is all about praise and reward when they get it right. You have to keep an eye on them for likely times, then take them to the area you want them to go. When they do it right, praise, praise, praise and provide their favorite treat.
* Try to be there when it's time to go. If you can't supervise, limit him to a place where he's not going to cause as much damage.
* When he gets it wrong, don't scold. If you catch him in the act, a firm "No" and a gentle trip to the place you want them to go is sufficient. If he finishes up, perfect: Praise, praise, praise and reward.
* I'm no crate training expert, but it sounds like you're putting a pee paid in the crate. My understanding is you don't want them to pee in their crate. I'll defer to someone else here, but maybe the crate is too big?
* If you catch him pooping in the house, I've had success placing it in a napkin and carrying it to the place you want them to go. For me, it was outside. Then I'd show it to the dog.

Good luck.

I want to try treat training with my 13 yr old who still makes mistakes but will go outside and GO if she has to GO. I have another 12 week old we are working with as well.

bump for other advice.

I don't have any better advise than what you just got - that was really good Alaskadad -

but I can say patience and give your puppy time - I had one trained in less than 2 weeks and my other took 10 months ....and still has little accidents when the weather is bad - so hang in there...and the treat training sounds really good - I may have to try that on Cheri on rainy days - she'll do anything for a treat

YORKIEMOM2B2006 01-16-2007 01:54 PM

try putting him on a leash and keep him with you all the time ( when he isnt sleeping at night) when you see him lookin like he has to go take him out/ or every half hour or so, ...and praise when he does go outside....

Thanks for giving me hope! We have tried the saying no and putting him back on his pad, but maybe we werent as consistant as we could have been. Unfortunately with the wonderful parts of the 1st trimester, picking up poop isnt very easy right now. Im hoping that will be better soon. I appreciate the advice. Thanks guys I hope something will help.

I have that problem with mine, she's nearly 10 months old. She knows not to wee inside but she does CONSTANT poops inside. We wouldn't mind as much if she didn't always do it on the carpet. Today she has done around 7 poops inside & it's not even 4:00pm yet where I live! My mum wants to give her away but she's really hard to train :(

SONYSW 01-16-2007 09:36 PM

My puppy chelsea is about the same age. She makes mistakes occasionally and mostly is our fault. She is potty train outdoor. During the first few weeks when we got her, we use the crate a lot and did not let her run around the house (or even in the bed). I feed her 3 times a day at almost the exact time 7AM, 12AM and 6AM and have free access of water during this period only. After meal, nap or crate, I took her outside to potty or pee. I ignore her during this period until she potty or pee outside. Praise-2 and treat-2 if she does her job. Immediately took her inside and play with her alot (associate potty outside, play inside). If she did not potty or pee, I put her back in the crate for 5 minutes and try again. Until eventually she pees or potty; and play inside. Eventually she understand......Potty or pee outside, I can play with you inside...hmmm. Associate potty/pee outside with treat, play inside the house and other pleasant things and do not let her play outside after she does her job. If she makes mistakes in front of me I say NO and immediately take her (and her poop outside) to show her where is the correct location. This sounds yuck but it works (I read it somewhere here). If I were you, I probably will not do pee pad training indoor since this may confuse her/him. Also I always associate crate with pleasant things. In the beginning I put all new toys and treat inside her crate, so she will not soil the crate. I hope this helps. Feel free to PM me for any questions.

I was browsing PetSmart the other day and noticed the Simple Solution "Pee Post." It's a yellow stake you stick in the yard that's treated with hormones (or scents) that encourage the dog to "go" there. It's only $8 on the website, and maybe worth a try, along with everything else.

Good luck! My boy is 1 yr. old now and he still has accidents from time to time. I don't mind so much, partly because we don't have carpet, and if I don't let him out in time, he shouldn't have to hold it!

As SONYSW mentioned, taking the pup and the poo outside helps. I did this with Raja and after the 3rd day he started to get the hang of it. If I don't let him out often enough, I'll still have some cleaning up to do (2 or 3 times a week at most) but the blame is on me.

OK, do you want him to go inside or outside? Because if you want him to go outside, and he has pooped outside once, that doesn't make sense. You need to stand outside with him on a leash for an hour until he poops. OR you can crate him (SMALL crate) for an hour, go outside for 10 mins, if no poop he goes back in the crate for 30 mins, back outside for 10, etc.

Second DO NOT put pee pads in the crate. That's not what a crate is for. The crate is to confine him so that he does not go. You need a much smaller crate.

He should not have freedom if he is not potty trained. A few days is not enough to earn freedom. Crate him when he is not supervised.

I think you are confusing him. Can you try to pick a method and stick with it? If he is not getting pads you probably just need to train him to go outside... I realize it's like 3 degrees out, but Loki does fine. Just throw a sweater on him and have a blanket ready for when he comes inside.

Ditto. Erin, you always give a good advice.

furby2000 01-18-2007 06:35 AM

I am sooo sorry you are going thru this, its so frustrating to me as well with my Ninna. Thanks for the tip on the smaller crate. I am off to the store to find a smaller one. Hoping it will work for her midnight mistakes...

I got my currant Yorkie at 7 months. His breeder claimed he was paper trained. It was fiction. He peed all over the kitchen floor. At 11 months, he will pee on the paper in the kitchen but poops all over the floor. I have never had a dog so messed up in my life. He obviously was crated 24/7, circles constantly and abused? I hired a trainer who agreed to work by each session because I obedience trained him but need help on his behavoir issues. We can\'t use a shaker can or hit the counter with a small magazine because he must have been hit, cringes and hides under his bedding in his crate and doesn\'t forget it if I move him to another room in another crate. So it\'s difficult to make him understand. We are going to start with the clicker and pray it works. His breeder should be ABUSED!
They don\'t understand what we expect from them, consistancy is important.
Don\'t give up since I haven\'t. I\'ve learned that all are different and some just take longer. I have a Chin and he\'s finally housebroken at 3 years. He\'s just a little slow. I must admit it takes time and tons of patience. They must earn their freedom in more household areas and rewards.
