Stop Them from Begging?
 
How do you resist the urge of giving into your Yorkie when they beg for food while you are eating? They look so sad and pathetic I do give in. It's hard NOT to! Any tips?

The second Otis starts jumping up and begging, I send him to his bed. I tell him "GO TO YOUR BED" and "STAY." And when we are done eating, he gets a big reward for sitting patiently.

So first of all, teach your Yorkie the commands "go to your bed" and "stay."

They might look cute and all when they're asking for food, but it really looks bad when you have company over for dinner, and a little unbehaved Yorkie is hopping from person to person begging for food.

Most importantly, if your little obedient Yorkie has been waiting all through dinner, make sure you give him a huge reward and praise him like he just won the Nobel Prize but only AFTER YOU ARE DONE EATING. Your dog will eventually learn the routine, and that he'll get rewarded for leaving you alone at the dinner table. He will learn he's not getting anything until you're done eating.

Wow, that's some great training there, Junebug! Think it's too late to train Yoda? He's almost 2 now!

Good tip Junebug. I really don't mind if Neesa embarasses me with company over, I just want him to understand when and what is appropriate. I will try those methods.

Two is still a baby! That's about the time Otis started begging really bad at the table. We would be at my boyfriend's parents' house for dinner, and all you could see was a little Yorkie head bouncing up and down at the end of the table.

As long as Yoda has a particular treat that he loves, you can always train him. It's amazing what they will do for treats!

Guess Yoda's not quite the "old dog you can't teach new tricks" yet, eh? :)

We definitely need to utilize and teach the "Go to your bed" and "Stay" commands!

Ive found ignoring my lill Lola works when we eat, she is only 12weeks...so im sure things my change, but so far so good....we make no eye contact with her and she gets the message...when we r done eating....cuddle time!:)

:thumbup: I do exactly the same although Joey's command is "Where are you supposed to be?".

He has a little bed in the kitchen. He will down/stay on that while we eat. I began by tossing him pieces of kibble (never human food from the table!) every few minutes to reinforce his good behavior and gradually lengthened the time he has to wait for his rewards.

On his own, he has generalized that behavior to when I am cooking. I've never given him that command while I cook, but one day looked up and noticed him in a down/stay on his bed while I cooked (with his eyes boring holes in me!:D ). Such a smart dog!!!

Would you allow a child to live on junk food just because they begged. Tell yourself it is what is best for them.

If you never start it, they won't beg for it. People are the ones who start the vicious circle.

Mine never beg at the table because I have never fed them from the table. If I have something that is ok for them to have I wait until I leave the table and then give it to them.

I Agree. Before you can train your dog, you need to discipline yourself.

If no one ever slips her a morsel she will never start begging. But it only takes one little morsel and they'll start to beg.

Mine usually entertain us with a game of peek a boo or tag while we eat.

It's easy around here, 2 out of the 3 will usually barf up any human food that they get ahold of. They have learned that when we're at the table eating they cannot come through the door into the dining room. It took one meal of me jumping up every time they moved to come in and join us. I don't look at them. Hubby thinks it's unfair, I don't like to clean the carpet after every meal.
