Two months and he still hates his harness
 
I don't know what to do, everytime I put it on he just lays there. I have tried treats, favorite toys, everything i can think of, once the harness comes off he is back to his old self. I don't know what I am doing wrong???!!! It is so frustrating. We went to puppy school and he wouldn't even play during off leash time, he just laid there.

Someone please help.

just keep at it Peeka hated the harness and clothes at first but i was persistant and i put a harness on him everyday. put it on and just leave it on him for ahile he will eventually move around and he will see it isn't killing him lol good luck

Toto did the same thing .... would just flatten herself out on the floor and lay there! We eventually found a private trainer in Louisiana [a Dog Whisperer] who came to our home and within an hour had her prancing up and down our driveway like a showdog!! :p I have no idea what he did but she has walked perfectly on the leash ever since. Please don't give up and please, please don't use a collar. The Yorkie trachea is so tiny and delicate it can be injured very easily.

The other reason to use the harness .... we went through a horrible week after my daughter's Westie was frightened by the UPS truck and pulled his head out of his collar and ran! She couldn't find him and long story short, a lady rescued him from the middle of a busy highway after he was nearly run over by a truck. Ultimately she got him back and I dare say, she will never ever take him out on his leash without his harness! ;)

I do not know which type of harness you use but I had the same experience with mine before until I bought this harness at Petco and she sudently pick it up and love the harness. The part that connect to the leash is at the back so it makes it easy for her/him to walk. After she/he is trained you can use other harness. Good luck.

Yeah we have a nylon harness and also a cloth one that is more like a soft velvety feeling, he hates them both. I will admit that he is slowly coming around, he tries to run around and get it off, but he will now eat and drink with it on. He just won't play, his ears don't go back anymore either and his tail is starting to come out from between his legs.

I have puppy classes tomorrow so I am going to talk to the trainer and see if she has any idea, because when we do off leash he won't even play because he doesn't like his harness, he just sits there and watches the other dogs run around, and I feel so bad because I want him to like his harness.

It is almost like he pouts. I can just see his little mind thinking, "take this thing off me" lol and I feel bad but I can't give in. As soon as the harness is off he is his old self bouncing around like a little maniac!!

At least there are signs of a little progress!!

Have you tried a vest harness? Cali hated the kind that was just the.....I don't know what they are called.......the kind that are just like loops for them to stick their legs through. Does that make sense? Plus, she's so small, she kept figuring out how to wiggle her way out. But the vest harness stays snug and we didn't have any problems with that.

we were trying to find a vest harness, but can't seem to locate one. We live in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, and all the pet stores seem to carry are the nylon ones. I am heading into Calgary this weekend and will try to see if I can find one at a pet store out there since it is a larger city!!

Well, I don't know exactly how it works with sending things out of the country but......there are a lot of people on YT who sell them. I got mine from Petsmart, however it's pink with bows and all that. Plus, it was over-priced. I think the ones that are sold by some of the YT folks are a much better quality. I think one of them are "Tigersmom" or something like that. The name of her store is go.fetch.comcast.net or something like that.

Yeah thanks for the information. I am going to look and see what I can find!! How do I know which size to get? he is 4.5lbs right now at 4 and a half months, so should i get a size that he will grow into?

She has a sizing chart on her site. I would get one that fits him now and another one when he grows.

I love my little guy and I don't want him to be uncomfortable, but I don't want him to think if he pouts that he will get the harness taken off, lol and man does he pout.

On most of those websites, they have a chart. On go.fetch, I know that she has you measure your yorkie to get it right.
