Problem housetraining.... My yorkie, Wicket, is doing better each day housetraining, but a lot of times I'll stand with him outside and he won't go for like 20 mins, then right when he gets in he'll wander off and go on the kitchen floor. I think it may have something to do with it being really cold outside and maybe he hasn't made the connection yet that the sooner he goes potty the sooner we can go in. Any ideas? Also, I'm not sure whether to give him a treat when we get inside after praising him a lot or if I should just praise him. Any suggestions? Thankies! |
i would definately not let him wander around.... especially if he doesnt go when you take him out. if he doesnt go, i would put him in his ex pen or whatever you have and then try again in a few. |
i am just now getting a little comfortable letting harley wander a little but i still pretty much keep on top of him and he is 6 months and hasnt had any accidents in a couple months now. |
Thanks for the tips :) I don't let him wander off too far from me, he's always in my sight. Whenever I have to put him down to be able to do something and don't want to put him in his crate, I have the kitchen blocked so he can't get to the rest of the house with a gate and a board. He goes on the kitchen floor sometimes after he doesn't go outside, if I leave him in the kitchen so I can go get things done. But I guess it's better than going on the carpet! Speaking of the lil monster, he just woke up from snoozin so I'd better go take him out! We start our puppy classes the Monday after next at Petsmart. It should be fun! |
Never treat him after he gets in the house after you have praised him outside for going. Only treat him outside. You should treat and praise simultaneously, outside. If you wait to treat him in the house, you have just rewarded him for coming in, not for going potty outside. I used a clicker to let Millie understand exactly what I needed her to do when she went outside. (In order to do this, you dog has to have a basic understanding of what the clicker is for; so you may have to start out with some basic training). But what I did was state the command "go potty"; I waited and if she got distracted I would repeat the command again, I kept this up until she would squat. As soon as she squatted I clicked, and told her "go potty". When she finished I treated and praised. After a while she expected the treat when I clicked, so I had to click after she finished and then she was praised and treated. But the click would tell her the EXACT behavior I was looking for, for her to get her treat. It did not take long for her to "go potty" when the command was made (because she wanted her treat). After a while you don't have to click anymore. You just state go potty, treat and praise. |
