Going Around Poles More often than not, I can't get Yoda to go around a pole (street sign pole or whatnot) the right way. He'll want to wander a bit on the leash, and go around the pole. I, of course, don't want him to go around the pole because sometimes I can't get the retractable leash around it easily. But yet, Yoda, being the stubborn one, won't 'come back' towards me so we can go around the pole easily. I have no idea if I am explaining this correctly, so bear with me. Is there an easy way to teach them to come back to you and not go around the pole the 'wrong way'? ;) |
Nope. LOL. At least I haven't found one! But I'm sure a professional trainer would have a way......The command "Heel!" should put your dog right by your left side.....oh yeah......not Higgins.......Definitely need some obedience experts here....... :o |
Maybe Yoda is trying to teach you to go around the pole ( just kidding) Try getting three dogs to go around the same way :p ............Cindy |
Heheh, okay, so I have it easy with just one... He's still so stubborn, that little boy! |
Toto's trainer, Paul, taught her the command "stay with me" to "rein her in" if she begins to wander too far out on her leash or begins to stop and smell every tiny little thing she encounters! We let her have the full length of her leash if it looks safe but if we are about to meet other dogs, people and expecially children we just tell her "stay with me" and she comes back in close enough we can reach down and scoop her up if need be! ;) It's unbelievable how fast those little legs can walk without actually running!! |
I've taught my dogs (a lab and yorkie) to go the "other way" or "this way" when i see them about to go around the pole, I'll stop the leash when they're even with the obstacle and say that command and gently pull back. Seems to work well enough, but not fool-proof! |
