Doea any one have a Yorkie over 1 or 2 years old that is finally potty trained after being a long rough road.....or that is still not potty trained and loosing their mind like me? Just curious because mine are 13 months old and 1 years old and still are not trained and I am starting to seriously loose it. I love them so much but I have actually contemplated giving up. :( |
Caren, I'm so sorry you are still struggling with this. :( I know how hard you try and I know it is just so frustrating for you. Hopefully someone here will have some answers for you. Keep looking up. :) I'm here if you need me! ;) |
How much do they weigh? The reason I asked is because if they are very small perhaps their bladder can't hold much. I have been told that Yorkies at times can be very difficult to train. Some never do. Buddy will be 3 in three weeks but he has been trained since he was 5mos. It was very time consuming and lots of patience was required and consistency is the key. I took a week off from work when I got him at 14wks and had him out every 1 1/2 hrs daily. Whenever he would drink water I would wait for 10 mins and out we would go. He was crated when I was not home and at night. I would come home at lunch time for another 6weeks to get him out and give him a break from the crate. It paid off because he has a bladder made of steel, however, he is 13lbs so I think the size also helps in bladder control. Also I gave him a tiny piece of liverwurst, per trainer, and used that reward for ONLY potty outside. He looked forward to that treat. When he was trained I no longer gave him the liverwurst. Good luck. Carol & Buddy |
Yep, Loki was a pain to house train but he is completely trained. We also went out OFTEN, as often as every 30 mins, until he started to be able to hold it longer. We crate trained and watched him very closely. He is 2 and has been completely trained since he was 1. He was pretty good by 8-10 months. He had some bladder problems (lots of UTI's, wetting in his sleep) but we got the UTI's cleared up and he has been on medicine for the incontinence. I'm so proud of him. It was frustrating but so worth it, since I'm now able to completely trust him. |
Everyone is giving good advise. My oldest is 16 months and fully trained, but like some of the others my she is almost 11 pounds so maybe that does make a differance. My little Abbie is 5 months old and will probably be about 5 pounds full grown. She does really well going to the door, but I also keep a potty pad next to the door just in case we don't see her sitting by the door. She won't sit at door long before she will give up and go on the potty pad. I will be curious to see if I have trouble with my smaller yorkie. So far she is behaving like my oldest did. My best advise is to don't give up. I also used the treat method which worked very well. They are lean treats that only have 1 calorie and have liver in them. My vet suggested these treats. They love love love them. Good Luck :) |
:) I'm sorry you are having a hard time with this. You aren't alone! Mine are 2 yrs., and 3 yrs. old and both trained between 6-8 months of age. I am a stay at home mom, so I think it made the consistency easier. Our system was to take them out or on pee pad every hour, without fail. And if they didn't go, wait 10 mins. and out again. If they did good, they got a treat. We did this until they were about 18 mos. old. If I left the house, each would go in their crate. Yes, it was very time consuming, but well worth it in the end. There were plenty of accidents when they were puppies, but I did notice a change after 6 mos of age and after neutering. Don't give up - It IS possible to potty train a yorkie! :) |
My Gidget will be two years old in February and does both on her pee pad. Emilee is 3 years old pees on pad, poos on linoleum in kitchen Joey will be be 3 in July and wears a belly band and poos on linoleum in bathroom (so no one can see) I don't mind though, I use to, but as long as it's on linoleum...I don't care. |
Pippa is 2 and was still having accidents (only during the night) upto about 3 months ago. |
Kodak is 2yrs old and still has an accident if you don't get home in time to let him out. He has a pad on the floor which he uses, but I know he doesn't make it to the pad sometimes. It took a minute to get him trained and treats help. I only give treats when he uses it outside or while teaching him commands. |
Molly is almost 3 and I trust her about 90% of the time. I have better success if she is not given full access of the house. |
Max is 3 and still has accidents. When I'm home. I'll take him out often. And he'll jump up at met to let me know that he needs to go BUT if I don't take him out, he'll go on the floor. He can hold it. He's 11 lbs and will hold it when he's in his crate or a small area but I can't let him and Abbie out in the livingroom unsupervised because he does not hold it then. Even though he's not 100% housebroken, he's still my baby so it doesn't matter--he's here to stay. He wears a bellyband at night when he sleeps with us, just in case ;) Abbie was trained very early--maybe 5-6 months. I trained her to go on a pee pad first but she always wanted to go outside when I would take Max out (which was about every 30 minutes) so eventually she stopped going on the pad and would hold it to go outside. She's 2 years old and 14 lbs. |
I have lost my mind. |
My little male was harder to train then my girl. He would yrt and lift his leg on the door frame right beside the peepad, and often go to my kitchen trash can and lift there, I put a small bathroom trash can on his peepad off to one size and now he goes there. I do still have some trouble with him trying to lift and mark other places , but only when my females are in heat. |
Baby is 3 years old and is potty trained. Around 13 months she started having less accidents. At 18 months she was barking at the back door. It can be done. If I don't hear her or if I wait too long she will pee right there, but thats my fault not hers. So don't worry it can be done. She did have a potty trained toy poodle to show her the ropes though. She copied everything she did and went out with her and saw what she was doing. Good luck!! |
My miko is 2 and has accident's also. Is this a yorkie thing?? It's seems from what I hear that Yorkie's tend not to be "fully" trainable. I get a little frustrated also. The only thing that saves him, is that "freakin" cute face he gives me after he's made an accident.:) |
Sissy is about 98% outside trained. Occasionally, I still miss her "signals" and she will go. She does take much longer outside to poop than to pee and sometimes she will come back inside after peeing and poop on the throw rug. I was getting very frustrated at around 10 months and it was then I started to finally get her very subtle signals that she needed to go. I also made the decision to begin taking her out at least every two hours since I am home most of the time. Between these two things, she very quickly made major progress. |
Mine are Trained Both of my boys (Remmy & Chance) are outside trained. There are accidents but they are few and far between. Usually my fault if there is one. But I use the bells on the back door and they go outside. We are on a schedule. And they are both crated when we are not home so there are no accidents to come home to. Remmy is 4 and Chance is 1. Chance turned one in Nov. |
Hi Sims, I have 2 boys, they are brothers, so both are 1 year and 4 months. Its just me and I work during the day so unfortunately their training is not consistant, but I am in the same boat as you! Love them to death, but seriously tired of my smelly house, stepping in pee & poo. I mean I take them out and walk, then we come in and they pee on the floor! They are not reversed trained bc they pee outside too.. pretty much they potty wherever they FEEL like it! My boys are 5lbs & 8lbs. Not huge, but not excessively small either! I know its my fault too for not being consistant! I am not contimplating giving them up or anything, im just tired of always cleaning up after them! |
My Molly was just a few months old when I developed some serious health problems and my daughter had to take her. My daughter had her for over a year and just couldn't get her trained. When I finally got her back permanently, I took her to a trainer for help once a week. After 3 months she is outdoor trained! What I did was first, controlled her food so it would be worth it to her to obey me. She was fed only twice a day and if she didn't eat within 15 minuters, it was put up until the next meal. Then, I put her in her kennel 1st thing in the a.m. when we woke up. (She sleeps with me and has never messed in my bed or her kennel.) When I was ready, I took her out. A first it took a long time out with her until she realized that she didn't get a treat or go back in until she did both jobs. I think in all those months she had not learned that we wanted her to go outside! When she went, she got some freedom in the house, but if she didn't, back inside the kennel. Tried again a little later. Soon we got that part, then we had to teach her NOT to go inside! If I wasn't sure she had gone enough, or I was thinking she may have to go soon, I put her on leash and "wore her" so I could catch it when she went. The I said NO! and took the poo or soaked up pee outside with her and showed her where to go. She learned this fast, but we had to go in every rooom before she saw there was No Place Inside that was OK! Soon, we were going weeks in between accidents and when she missed, it was usually because I was not observant enough. Now I am teacing her to whimper at the door instead of scratching for attention. She would scratch anything and it was hard to tell what she wanted! Don't give up - Yorkies are smart dogs, but willfull and reluctant to give up control. If you are more stubborn than they are, they'll get trained! Kathy |

training Kate (18 mos) is 100% trained..such a perfect angel and trained by 6 months...then we have Emee and Becca who are a year and have an accident once in awhile...but I have no carpets. |
Hope goes on her pads, she will go and poop outside but not pee... Tootie on the other hand.. LOL.. he WILL NOT POOP outside.. its almost like he is afraid! He will wait and tinkle outside almost all the time but he will come back in the house to do his "business"...even if the door is open, he will run in, it is kinda funny but a very good thing I dont have carpet! Tootie is 16 months old, Hope is 9 months.... |
