can't travel :( I worked so hard with my Spencer to get him trained to use the pad. We were on a HUGE roller coaster but he's finally getting it. By gateing him to only half the house, he has learned to use his pad every time. I'm going to guess he hasn't had any accidents in over two or three weeks now. BUT: When we go to grandma's house (my mom and dad's house), he follows no rules, and just goes wherever he wants, even though I put a pad down for him and show him where it's at. When he was real young, I used to take him to grandma's house every day instead of leaving him alone as a puppy, he always used the pad at grandma's then. Now that he's grown up a bit, I leave him at home alone while I'm at work and he only goes to grandmas on weekends or if I decide to take him over after work when we eat supper there. He does his business anywhere he wants over there now. I really want him to be a dog that I can take anywhere and behave, for one because I love him so much I like having him around all the time, but also I don't want him to be alone anymore than he has to be, but if he refuses to act right, it really makes it hard for me to justify taking him anywhere. Anyone else have this issue? When I'm at mom and dad's, I'm usually very busy and don't have time to "retrain him over there". I guess that's what I do really need to do though... Any suggestions???:( |
I have this exact same problem. I would like to hear what advice Yorkie Talkers have. |
I'm not potty training expert since Rosie never uses her pad. However, I did learn that they will have more accidents if their space is bigger. Does your dog have a run of the whole house when you are there or is the space he has access to bigger? |
We learned in puppy school that dogs do not generalize from one location to another. For example, Gracie will "down" at home without hand cues, but will in no way do this at puppy school. We were told that we need to train for each new environment, and train for distractions. I think you hit the nail on the head. Perhaps you can schedule some "trips" to grandmas on the weekend, or on days off, when you can work with your baby on using the pads there, and you won't be busy tied up visiting etc. I don't use pads except at home. When I take Gracie to other people's homes, I potty her outside on the way in, before we get into the car to go home, and every 1-2 hours in between. I also limit her water while we are visiting. She has not had one accident at another person's home yet, knock on wood! |
OK so each environment does have to be trained. That's kind of what I thought. I can make some time to train with him at grandma's house. His potty habits are very regular ow so I can predict them so I really have no reason to allow that to happen. As for peeing, I can limit his water just like you have and just watch him and work with him on that. He likes to "mark" because my parents have a dog too. I know there's probably not anything I can do for that but neuter. I want to breed him for the pick of the liter but haven't found a mate for him yet. |
Sorry to say but that is a big problem with pad training. You teach the dog that it's OK to go inside. So they think the carpet (or whatever) is fair game. When you train them to go outside you teach them to go on grass, which feels and smells completely different than anything inside. They also learn not to just go to a corner in the kitchen but to go to the door, get a leash on, go outside, etc. It is a routine that easily transfers to another home. |

I supose I could re-do his potty training and train him to go outside. I know it can be done, it's just way too convienent for him to use the pad inside... |

Bella does the same thing. It is so frustrating. She is 8 months old and weighs about 5 lbs. She rarely has any accidents, I mean rarley when we are at home, and when we go to my parents which we do every weekend for dinner and sometimes twice a weekend, she goes wherever and whenever she pleases. I don't know what to do. We take her out every 45 min to 1 hr, and she still pees and poops in the house. I know my parents are getting mad because at first they were like oh she is just a puppy and now they are just fed up. I hate to not take her over there anymore b/c she loves to play with my parents two dogs(one yorkie and a papillion). Please someone help! |
Normal Potty Frequency Can anyone tell me how often a healthy adult Yorkie needs to go out? I think my dog urinates about every 2-3 hrs. & defecates about one or 2 times a day. Is this normal? Ted's sneeky & doesn't always let me know he wants out. He sometimes pees in our laundry or tiled hallway. We live near Chicago where it's cold in the winter. Often he doesn't want to go out & won't do anything when he's out there, then will urinate inside. |

We also live near Chicago and honestly, with this mild weather he shouldn't be having a problem. Loki doesn't even want to be bothered to put his coat on. When it is rainy sometimes I have to insist that he go outside, but he always does. He used to run to the door and ring his bells and then try to run outside and right back in. If I stood on the porch and told him to go potty he would go quickly and come back. After doing this several times he figured out that the rules don't change because it is raining. You should NOT be allowing him freedom if he is not going when he is outside. You should crate him and then try again later and when he does go, then he can have freedom. |
When we travel with our pup of 4 1/2 months...the crate comes with us. If we can't watch her, she is in the crate. When she is out of the crate we take her outside more frequently then we do at home. |
I have the same problem with my 8+ month old pup. I had her pad trained and she would USUALLY use it at other people's houses. The advice I got on this board was that pad training them teaches them it's ok to potty in the house. So at 4 months old I took away the pads and honestly IT HAS NOT HELPED!!! When my pup is at home she's good, rings the bell (albeit too often), and potties outside exclusively. When we are at other people's houses (typically when friends are dog sitting) she likes to pee on their couches, beds, and luggage! I don't know how to get her to stop because I've never actually caught her in the act and she has never done anything so horrid at home. |
