Play pens I was wondering if anyone here has used an infant playpen to help poppy train their yorkie pup?? I am getting a new puppy at the end of January and I was hoping to use a playpen to house her bed, food, and potty pad. I was hoping this would serve as a way to help get her pee pee pad trained....does anyone have any advice??? This would only be for when I was gone or for quiet time. My main question is would this be a way to get her to use the potty pad?? Thanks:) |
If you get one, I would suggest getting one specifically for puppies. I bought the one from Walmart for infants and it was no time that they was trying to climb out. So, I could not leave him in there when I left for a bit -- afraid he would get caught up in the netting. I would be surprised if either of mine spent an hour total in it. So, for me it was a waste of money. Both breeders I got Ben and Sadie from used playpens for their litters -- I think that is fine for maybe 8 weeks or so, but after that they are too active and ingenious. |
Yea that was a concern of mine was her climbing out! I am really interested in using it to help with the pee pee pad training to get her familiar with the pad is to potty on and then hopefully I can slowly adjust her to using the pads outside the pen! I will price the doggie play pens I know they are more spendy! |
I bought a "pet gear" puppy play pen online - off ebay, from KC Kayla's pet supplies - I'm sure i could find the link for you. It's very good quality - and it's pink! :) I take my pupp to work and it stays here, but it is easily portable, and just the right size for a food/water area - 1/2 a pee pad and play room. She goes on the pee pad in there 90% of the time for #1's, and maybe 50% for #2's. What I've been doing is - when she wakes up from her nap I put her leash on her and direct her to the pad, when she goes on it I praise her. She hates the play pen though - really, she does. but it is necessary |
I LOVE Playpens! When I got my Brodie (the handsome devil to the left there) thats exactly what I did. His bed was in one corner and the rest was lined in pee pads and there was an area for him to eat as well , while I was at work. It worked out excellent for me! He never tried to climb out, he was too small. Even when we were home just watching TV, I'd put him in there to prevent carpet accidents and he was content. It worked great for me and I also used the same one when my Chi was born Tia. She stayed in it as well. Now I use it as my puppies area. My moms and pups stay in there. I love them! I stretch a blanket over the top and use these heavy duty clamps (they are a mans tool gadgit?) and that provides privacy for the moms and babies. I bought mine at Walmart and I LOVE IT !!! |
I have seen the pink soft sided puppy play pens online while I was searching but I just cant get myself to pay 90.00 for one!!! Mine will only be for home use but I will probably break down and buy it! The Petsmart site has them in pink and blue. I might go to PEtsmart tonight and see if they have them in! I am hoping when I get her at 8 weeks she wont know any different and will grow to like it Hahah! Do you think the pink one you have it the same size as an infant one??? I am basically concerned about the height. I am able to check her throughout the day as well as my boyfriend so it wont be for long periods of time. just an hour here and there and at night to sleep in of course until she is big enough and potty trained. |

We bought a portable pet yard at our local pet store, but I've seen it at Petco and I think they had it at Petsmart. It works fine. It's called a small animal pet yard, I believe. Plenty of room for our Pookie's small crate and a potty pad area, altho our large potty pad is closer to the outside door and we are moving it ever closer to the outside. She will pee on the pad almost 100% of the time and poo on it about 75% of the time. But the yard pen is vinyl-coated heavy wire and has two sections out of eight (or is it six? - I'm not at home right now, so can't remember) that interlock. So we leave it open when we're home and interlock it when we are leaving. It only cost about $69. which was fairly reasonable in comparison to actual baby playpens and it's not something she could ever climb out of. |
I SO wish I could find something like that for that price!!! It's funny with the poo-ing off the pad eh? |
Yeah, that is weird. They prefer pooing elsewhere for some reason, or don't make the connection to the pee-pad. I did want to say about the playpen that they may not take to it right away. Our Pookie is very vocal when we close it and leave her. She's okay at first, until she realizes we are really gone. Then she barks and howls. So we are looking for doggie daycare right now. But if you can, it's best to get them used to it gradually. So close it and leave for a minute at first, then two, then three, then maybe five, then seven, then ten and so on until you're up to an hour. We didn't do that correctly as we were forced to spend time away right away. And unfortunately we're paying for it now. |
I have the Dog n Go playpen and love it. When I got Cali at 9 weeks she took right to it and I had her bed at one end and one pee pad at the other. SHe was trained in a few weeks. WHen I needed to go out I would just say I have to go to Nana's (I help out my parents) and she would run right in and curl up. She is now old enough to have run of the house when I'm gone but I still have it up and she uses the pad in there. Also if workmen are over or company I can put them safely in there. She has never tried to get out and she is a climber. |
Today was my lucky day!!! 1 Attachment(s) OKay I ended up going to Petsmart just to look and see if they even had one of the pink dog play pens and they had one! When I seen the price I was sooo happy it was ON SALE for 50.00 because someone bought the item online at Petsmart.com and returned it to the store and our store does not sell a lot of the larger dog items so they clearanced it out due to lack of shelf space!!!! Now I have a very cute pink playpen for my new baby....I just hope she likes it! I think this is the same one that people were talking about!! |
These are my favorites. They fold up and have a handle also. The seller "foryourpets" is very good. So was shipping time. They have different heights also. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-24-Exercise-...QQcmdZViewItem Forgot to say I put a piece of linoleum underneath it. Found this too, but never ordered anything from them... http://cgi.ebay.com/177-LARGE-Dog-FE...QQcmdZViewItem |
I had one of the wire crates when I got Gracie as a pup but I sold it to my neighbor when she got a puppy because I didnt think I would be getting another dog! I live in an apartment now and I needed something that didnt take up a large amount of space but still be functional! The wire crates are very niece though if I had the room :) |

I am SO pumped for you! That's the exact one I have! My baby was 12 weeks and doesn't like it - I think that's because the breeder let her run around, and she likes to be with her momma!!!:) Let us know how it goes! |
I will let you know how it goes! Gracie will not go intoa crate AT ALL so I am hopiing to train my new puppy a little better :) She will be way to small to be left in the same room with Gracie when I get her so this pen will be the perfect little home for her. I was told to make sure an gradually introduce her to it and I will give it a try! The pen is sooo nice and its very girly!!!! |
Yes it is and the blanket/pad that you put in there washes REALLY well too :p |
playpens hi, i was thkng of getting one of those playpens for my new puppy-she is a handful and i cant seem to get a gate big enough for our kichen for when i'm out /working. I am worried that she will get crazy in there and knock the wire one over -when it's inside=any of you used those? it doesnt look like it will hoist into the floor-and the pink one is way cute, but wouldnt a puppy chew right through it??? curious.... and tired of coming home to find my puppy escaped from my rigged baby gate-and surprises on the carpet- although she usually attempts to get to the potty pad when she's out roaming |

As far as the wire cages I had it was rather heavy so Gracie couldnt knock it over or move it even. The only thing I made sure of was that the wire crossing were not too big to where she could get her head stuck or anything. I bought the pink playpen for my new puppy just because I think it will help protect my carpet where as the wire cages you have to put a rather thick lining in them so in case of accidents like water spills or potty/poop wouldnt stain! And also it seems alot more cozy for my baby! I would suggest the pink playpen or they come in blue and made by pet gear. |

Ours is 36" high. Impossible for our puppy to get out of. |
Hi Everyone; First time posting, but for my Cosmo, who is a year old and about 5 lbs, I went to Petsmart and got one of the portable play yard pens. I have both a German Shepard and 5 kids still at home so needed something safe for my baby. It is 26" high, metal and folds up. I can make it as small as I want or expand it totally when we are outside. Because of it folding, I also can take it to my grandbabies house, camping, around different parts of the house, etc. The cost was around $40. My Cosmo chews all the time so I couldn't get anything that might hurt him if he swallowed. I have him litter box trained and have a bed in it for him. I keep a larger one in my kitchen, for when I'm at work, and one by the side of my bed to sleep by me. The larger one is big enough to fit my Shepard,(the cost was around $70, it is 5 ft tall, but also folds up) so gives Cosmo losts of running room during the day. I have to say that this was the best purchase that I could have made for Cosmo. I put him in it when people are over, since I am so nervous that someone might step on him. Particularly when my grandson is over, he is 3. Thanks |
Tucker still uses a human baby playpen and loves it. Often when he is in his bigger ex-pen he'll whine for his playpen. He prefers to sleep there. It's nice because it is on wheels so we can roll him around the house with us. He is just over 4 months old. I buy heavy duty shower curtain liners and wrap the mattress with it. I put a pee pad in a doggie litter box and one end and his bed, dishes toys at the other end. He has chewed two small holes in the mesh, but I resewed them and keep them sprayed with bitter bite. He'll also often chew through the shower curtain liner which is annoying, but again I use the bitter bite here too. Julie and Tucker :aimeeyork |
Updated! Well I brought Lily home today and we are using her pink playpens I bought. We have it all set up with her food and sleep area on one end and her pee pad on the other. I just have one question though.... Right now I just put her in the playpen to potty on the pad.....should I have another pee pad somewhere else and be bringing her to that one too?? Or do I wait until she gets the one in the playpen down to the right potty area??? |

Thanks!! |
I bought a play pen when i first got my puppy. When he was in it he would pee on the pads but never poop. When he out of it he disregards the pads and goes on the carpet. He plays in it when im cooking or cleaning and dont want to put him in the crate..But when he gets tired of playing he whines and tries to jump out, but he cant..I use it sometimes but the crate works better for me overnight..for some reason he doesnt cry in the crate at night but he does in the pen.. |
