If my 4-pounder Jack can do it, yours can too! I had the same fear when we first got him. I honestly thought it was too cold for his tiny body. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized he should be able to stay outside for the minute it takes to do his business. So I made him do it. I was firm. He got no praise, no treats, no love unless he went outside and did his business. It worked. And I don't take the time to put booties or coats on him for that. Pee breaks are not worth my time. I only dress him up for longer walks. |
It's not too cold. I live in Syracuse- cold and extreme snowfalls. I outside trained my 3 lb 8 month old. I have had him 3 months. The first week was tough until he got the hang of it. Rain, snow, cold- he does his business in 2 minutes flat. He actually loves the snow. DOesn't like booties, though. I figure if he's only out a couple of minutes, he's ok. I'll put a sweater on him, but he dosn't even shiver. He shivered at first when we got him in September but I think it was from fear of the unknown since he had never been outside before that according to the breeder. |

We started outside training right away - no pads for him. I asked the trainer and vet about the shots and they both said this was fine to do. We got him in the spring, I think we got one final dusting of snow and then he learned all summer and fall and by the time it was cold he was actually easier to train because he would go out, pee and come back! Yes there were some wet mornings he wasn't thrilled to go out in, but we also did the crate thing and he made it through last winter fine. So far this year we have had mild weather and one snowstorm and he didn't even seem to care. In fact, he would ask to go out so he could go eat the snow! His clothes from last year don't fit him so I got him one really good (It's by Apache River) he has 2 sweatshirts and he's good to go! |
Jaxon has been trained to ring the bells and do his business outside. But when it's really cold in the morning, he doesn't want to go out. This morning it was cold and he peed on the deck instead of going down the stairs to the grass. We still have pads inside just in case. |
I like to train mine with a verbal command. I use "hurry up". With the two puppies I am in the bathroom with the pee pad and the door shut. As soon as I see one going I use the words and of course lots of praise. Then the other one will look sniff and follow in line with the same. This is a nightly routine cause we have carpet upstairs. The mom Molly goes pretty much on command and it is nice if you are at a place that has a different surface such as cement or? She knows what she should do. When I am sure the pups have "got it" I will start to train outside in a certain area. Good luck on your training. |
